City Government Saga in Flatonia Takes Another Unexpected Turn

Flatonia City Manager Sarah Novo and City Secretary Heather Ambrose submitted letters of resignation last week. The Flatonia City Council will consider those resignations at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 2.
Lots of Dirt Moving in Schulenburg As Two Construction Projects Start

Groundwork recently started on a pair of big construction projects in Schulenburg. Developers of the Texan Convenience Store at the southwest corner of US 77 and Interstate 10 and the Ace Hardware Store at 210 Heinrich Avenue behind the Best Western both filed development permits with the City.
Austin Artists Highlight Local Celebrity Alpacas in Holman Barn Mural

Two Austin artists were in Fayette County last week, painting a mural on the entire side of the alpaca barn at Texas Party Animals in Holman, the alpaca-rental business owned by Loretta Hajovsky that continues to gain state and national attention (Cadbury bunny try-out finalist, etc.). The husband/wife are team were Juan Villegas and Rosemary Allen. The painting is of an old hippie bus with the alpacas driving and hanging out the windows. Shown left are the artists after finishing with the mural and joined by some of the live alpacas. Below is the mural in progress.
As H.S. Volleyball Season Arrives, Schulenburg Gym Still Being Repaired from Winter Storm

Practice for high school volleyball season begins Monday and scrimmages begin later in the week. Over in Schulenburg, those events will be in the old gym because the new high school gym is still dealing with the aftermath of February’s freeze.
Locals Compete at Texas Shooting Games

The Fayette County 4-H Shooting Sports had two members recently participate in the Texas 4-H State Shooting Games held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, July 21-24. Pictured are Austin Nedbalek (left) and Gavin Noak (right). They shot in the following events while there, International Skeet, American Skeet, WhizBang, American Trap and Sporting Clays. The Fayette County 4-H Shooting Sports meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month at the Fayette County Gun Club. Kates Brothers’ Historic Accomplishment

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football online magazine recently did a feature story detailing how the Kates brothers are believed to be the first trio to ever hold Texas high school football head coaching jobs at the same time. Left to right is Ged, Will and Matt Kates. Ged is the head coach at 5A Richland High School in Fort Worth. Will was a longtime La Grange assistant head coach before being hired as the head coach at 3A Merkel (outside Abilene) this spring. Matt heads into his 12th year as head coach at La Grange this season. He has held the La Grange head coaching position longer than anyone in school history.

Fayette County Commissioners continued chipping away at next year’s budget during a pair of meetings this week. After meeting on Monday, they still faced a $3.45 million deficit.
Relay For Life & Fundraiser Details in LG Are Finalized

The 2021 Relay For Life of La Grange will be held at Leopard Stadium on Saturday, September 25, beginning at 6 p.m. The Survivor/Caregiver Lap will follow the Opening Ceremony, after which many laps will be walked by the members of the 8 teams who have been raising money to help the American Cancer Society in its fight against this disease.
Bridging the Gap

Every day, it seems, more and more steel and concrete get added to the new Highway 71 business bridge over the Colorado River in La Grange. The two growing sides of the bridge have not met in the middle – yet. As we have reported previously, this new bridge will not replace the one adjacent to it, but rather the two bridges will co-exist, each carrying one-way traffic. Photos by Jeff Wick
Produce Truck Flips

A produce truck rolled on its side in a wreck at the intersection of SH 159 and SH 71 Bypass in La Grange Monday morning, July 26. The crash happened around 10 a.m.
Hostyn, Plum Youth Volunteer in Minnesota

Youth from Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Parish in Plum and Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish in Hostyn traveled to Minnesota last week to take part in a Catholic Heart Work Camp. The group spent of week volunteering around the Minneapolis and St. Paul, including working at a food pantry distribution center, above. They also worked at several home of elderly residents in the area. The kids enjoyed Christian fellowship with other youth from around the country and slept at Holy Family Catholic School in Victoria, Minnesota, where they also had daily Mass and faith programs. Catholic Heart Works Camps held a number of similar events around the country this summer. A Catholic Heart Work Camp was held in La Grange in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Picnic Season is Back

The Summer Church Picnic Season came back this year after most of the celebrations were canceled last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A few local parishes decided to cancel their parish picnics once again this year.
Lady Horns Volleyball Team Receives Academic Award

The Schulenburg Lady Horns Volleyball Team is proud to announce that they are a recipient of the 2020-2021 United States Marine Corps-American Volleyball Coaches Association (USMC/AVCA) Team Academic Award. It is the 8th consecutive year that the Lady Horns have received the award.

The National Party of Texas comes back to Wolters Park in Schulenburg after taking a break last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This year’s Schulenburg Festival takes place Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 5-8.

The Schulenburg Festival Pageant took place on, Saturday, July 17, at the Schulenburg Civic Center. Miss Schulenburg went to Carolyn Prihoda.
Historical Commission Meets for Book Signing

A big crowd attended the Fayette County Historical Commission meeting at Sengelmann Hall in Schulenburg on Monday, July 19. The meeting featured a talk, book signing and musical performances by Frances Barton and John K.
LGISD Turf Project Trudges Along Despite Rain

Despite rain delays, workers at the La Grange High School Stadium artificial turf project managed to complete demolision work and install two feet of compacted select fill foundation that will support the future artificial turf surface. The dirt work shown in the top of the photo is for drainage improvements that the district has undertaken this summer. Read more about this project on Page A4.
Optimist Soccer Deadline is Aug. 1

Misty Touchet of the La Grange Optimist Club (pictured above) was signing up kids for youth sports at the La Grange Movie Night last Friday. Optimist Club Fall Soccer registration forms are out. Fall soccer is open to PreK (4 yr. olds) Thru 8th grade boys and girls (coed). Deadline is August 1st. Practice will begin after school starts (week of Aug. 23rd). Coaches will set their own practice days and times during the week in the evenings. Games will be played every Saturday morning beginning Sept. 11 through Oct. 30. Two La Grange High School Grads To Play College Ball

Two La Grange High School graduates from the Class of 2021 have accepted offers to continue their athletic careers in college. Wyatt Wick, the ace of the La Grange baseball pitching staff has accepted an offer to play baseball for Galveston College. Alyssa Dela Rosa, a star for the La Grange softball team has accepted an offer to play for Sam Houston State University.

Ledbetter Community Center Hosts Bingo for Seniors

C Bingo for Seniors (age 60 and older, plus guests) is held on the second Sunday of the month at the Ledbetter Community Center from 2 to 4 p.m. Cost is $5 per card, which covers 10 plus games and prizes.

Turtle Wing Toast Slated Jan. 25 in Schulenburg

The Turtle Wing Foundation’s annual Toast event is slated for Thursday, Jan. 25 at Sengelmann Hall (upstairs) in Schulenburg. Doors open and cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. with hors’devours and a cash bar. The program begins at 7 p.m.
