La Grange High School student Riley Youens placed eighth overall in the girls 15-16-year-old javelin competition (out of 70 competitors) in the nation at the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships at Humble Aug. 3. Youens was second among 15-year-olds with her throw of 106-feet, 5-inches.

Former Houston Oiler quarterback Dan Pastorini (shown here signing autographs) spent Saturday visiting with attendees at the Schulenburg Festival. His appearance was sponsored by attorney Ken Bigham. Pastorini was a first round draft pick by the Oilers (third overall pick) and played for the Oilers from 1971 to 1979 before winning a Super Bowl with the Raiders in 1980. Schulenburg Festival Attendance Down from Previous Years, But Event Still Draws Thousands

Thousands flocked to Wolters Park in Schulenburg for the 2021 Schulenburg Festival this past weekend. The “National Party of Texas,” as the event bills itself, featured four days of music entertainment, rodeo action, cookoffs, sports tournaments, a parade, carnival and more.

Groundwork recently started on a pair of big construction projects in Schulenburg. Developers of the Texan Convenience Store at the southwest corner of US 77 and Interstate 10 and the Ace Hardware Store at 210 Heinrich Avenue behind the Best Western both filed development permits with the City.
Austin Artists Highlight Local Celebrity Alpacas in Holman Barn Mural

Two Austin artists were in Fayette County last week, painting a mural on the entire side of the alpaca barn at Texas Party Animals in Holman, the alpaca-rental business owned by Loretta Hajovsky that continues to gain state and national attention (Cadbury bunny try-out finalist, etc.). The husband/wife are team were Juan Villegas and Rosemary Allen. The painting is of an old hippie bus with the alpacas driving and hanging out the windows. Shown left are the artists after finishing with the mural and joined by some of the live alpacas. Below is the mural in progress.
As H.S. Volleyball Season Arrives, Schulenburg Gym Still Being Repaired from Winter Storm

Practice for high school volleyball season begins Monday and scrimmages begin later in the week. Over in Schulenburg, those events will be in the old gym because the new high school gym is still dealing with the aftermath of February’s freeze.
Locals Compete at Texas Shooting Games

The Fayette County 4-H Shooting Sports had two members recently participate in the Texas 4-H State Shooting Games held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, July 21-24. Pictured are Austin Nedbalek (left) and Gavin Noak (right). They shot in the following events while there, International Skeet, American Skeet, WhizBang, American Trap and Sporting Clays. The Fayette County 4-H Shooting Sports meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month at the Fayette County Gun Club. Kates Brothers’ Historic Accomplishment

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football online magazine recently did a feature story detailing how the Kates brothers are believed to be the first trio to ever hold Texas high school football head coaching jobs at the same time. Left to right is Ged, Will and Matt Kates. Ged is the head coach at 5A Richland High School in Fort Worth. Will was a longtime La Grange assistant head coach before being hired as the head coach at 3A Merkel (outside Abilene) this spring. Matt heads into his 12th year as head coach at La Grange this season. He has held the La Grange head coaching position longer than anyone in school history.

LCRA Accepting Applications For Community Grant Program

Applications for grants of up to $50,000 to support first responders and community projects are available from the Lower Colorado River Authority.
