How Sweep It Is!

La Grange Beats Smithville in Four The La Grange volleyball team went to Smithville Friday and bounced back from a slow start to beat the Lady Tigers in four sets. After dropping the first set 21-25, the Lady Leps won the next three 25-21, 25-14, 25-19.

Remembering the Heroes Buried at Monument Hill

Saturday, Texas Heroes Day events were held at Monument Hill and Kriesche Brewery State Historic Site. The monument overlooking the Colorado River above La Grange marks the tomb of the men that died during the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the ill-fated Mier expedition of November 1842, also known as the “black bean” incident. Saturday’s events included, clockwise from top left: Texian Reenactors doing a gun salute to the fallen, laying of wreaths on the tomb, a speech by Fayette County Justice of the Peace Kyle Hartmann and Color Guard and Taps ceremonies by the Colorado Valley Marine Corps League. Constitution Day Celebrated On Courthouse Lawn Friday

Friday, Sept. 17, was Constitution Day in the United States. To mark the occasion, local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution organized celebrations on courthouse lawns across the nation, including in La Grange. At 4 p.m. Eastern Time (3 p.m. in Texas), at same day and time the Constitution was signed in 1787, the groups simultaneously rang bells for one minute.
The Show Must Go On – For Mr. Hansen

Local Teens Shine the Spotlight on Mental Health

A group of young ladies from La Grange spread messages of hope to those traveling through town on Friday, Sept. 17 Danyelle McIntyre, the organizer and a junior at La Grange High School, held up a poster that read “I’m living proof that it gets better #SUICIDEPREVENTION.” McIntyre has also started an Instagram account @notok_andthatsok to raise awareness about mental health.
Local Business Owner Dies in Accident

La Grange Subway owner Tom Hudson died in a deer stand accident on his property near Winchester Monday afternoon, Sept. 13.

Dana Sternadel and her husband moved from El Campo to La Grange this year and are really enjoying this area and the nature of their Forest Hills East neighborhood. “My yard has been full of hummingbirds the past few weeks. As with so many birds, hummingbirds don’t come close to people, but one morning I stood still enough for long enough time so that a few birds ate from the feeder I held in my hands; some even stood on my fingers; that was a neat experience. La Grange Volleyball Opens District Play With a Dominating Victory

The La Grange volleyball team has officially put its early season struggles in the rear view mirror. The Lady Leps may still only have a 10-22 overall record but they won their first match that really counts Friday, blasting Austin Eastside 25-9, 25-3, 25-6 in the district opener for both teams.

RT-C Beats Somerville The Round Top-Carmine volleyball team won its district opener Friday, beating Somerville 25-16, 25-17, 25-19. Ilse Salinas had 10 kills and seven digs.
Fayetteville Boys Win Moulton Cross Country Meet

The Fayetteville boys cross country team won the Moulton meet last week in the 1A/2A classification and Cole Fenhaus was the individual champion. Car Fire Spreads

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. their office received multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle and grass fire on State Hwy. 71 westbound near Halstedt Rd. The La Grange Fire Department and Ellinger Fire Departments were notified and responded to the scene along with Deputies Ryan Meagher and Ted Thomas. Upon arrival it was reported the vehicle was fully engulfed and a large grass fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no reported injuries. The driver said he was driving on his property when the vehicle stopped running.’ As he walked back to his house the grass caught fire under the vehicle and spread quickly. The 2005 Nissan Xterra was a total loss.
Monument Hill’s Texas Heroes Day Events are This Saturday

On Saturday, Sept. 18, Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host its annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. As part of state-wide Texas Heroes Day commemorations, this ceremony honors the Republic of Texas soldiers killed in the Dawson and Mier Expeditions who are entombed on Monument Hill. This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from Fayette County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, the Honorable Judge Kyle Hartmann, as well as the traditional wreath-laying ceremony and gun salute led by costumed re-enactors. Seating for the ceremony may be limited. Personal lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. Admission fees are waived for ceremony attendees.
How Was This Year’s Fayette County Fair?

Fayette County Fair President Michael Zuhn told the Record on Wednesday that attendance at the Fair was down compared to 2019. He did not yet have complete attendance numbers, but he expected to get those numbers later this week.
Murdered La Grange Woman Dreamed of Being a Teacher

Investigators have not yet released the name of the woman murdered in La Grange on Saturday, but the victim’s mother, Michelle Phillips, identified her slain daughter as 20-year-old Ezrianna Poncik of La Grange.

Colorado Co. Livestock Producers Reminded to Report Forage Losses by January 30

Colorado County U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dawn Hoffmann reminds livestock producers who suffered grazing losses that occurred throughout 2023 due to drought to report their losses timely and to enroll in the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) by Jan. 30, 2024.

What Does a Red Door Mean?

My six-year-old daughter has always loved to draw and color. In 2021, she drew a lovely picture with a blue sky, green grass, a tall tree, and… a random red door.

Texas Ramp Project 2023 Year In Review

The Texas Ramp Project (TRP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free wheelchair ramps to low-income older adults and people with disabilities identified by local health care providers and social workers. Ramps are built exclusively with volunteer labor, keeping costs to a minimum. Ramps are built without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, age, or gender.

Animal Shelter Weekly Update

As of Jan. 5, total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 23: 8 dogs and 15 cats in need. As of Jan 5, the shelter has 70 animals in care: 36 dogs/34 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

Annual You Matter Beard & Moustache Competition Jan. 20
