Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter 2023 Recap

The year 2023 was a difficult year for animal welfare organizations all over the country, including your community animal shelter. Your commitment to helping us help those that can’t help themselves means the world to us and them.

This year, we didn’t think we would see more animals than we did in 2022 when we cared for 1,411 dogs and cats and saved 97% of those in our care. At year end 2023 we have cared for 1,597 dogs and cats and we saved 97% of those lives. Below is the breakdown of 2023: Total 2023 Intake: 1,597 848 cats/749 dogs Transfer to rescue: 470 - 83 cats/387 dogs Adoptions: 968 - 678 cats/290 dogs Return to owner: 95 - 8 cats/87 dogs Euthanized: 37 - 26 cats/11 dogs With your support, we treated hundreds with illnesses and conditions that might otherwise keep them from getting adopted. We’ve saved Parvo puppies, treated heartworm, and mange. We’ve cared for kittens with ringworm, Coccidia, and Panleukopenia, all very contagious and can be catastrophic in this intensive housing environment. At one point in 2023 we had over 80 kittens and dozens of puppies in foster care.

We begin 2024 with 81 animals in our care including those in kennel and in foster. It’s not their fault. It’s not the shelter’s fault. It’s a community problem and requires a community solution. With your help we are doing everything we can to care for and find loving homes for the unwanted dogs and cats in Fayette County.
