Local Root Beer A Huge Hit At the Fayette County Fair

As the Fayette County Fair is fast approaching, many fairgoers think about the parade, the queen’s pageant, the entertainment, the livestock shows, the rides, while others like Jacob Darby, owner of Darby Family Farms, are thinking about root beer. Why root beer you may ask?

“It’s an old-timey classic, you just can’t go wrong with root beer,” said Darby, and he found that out in 2015. “We started with homemade root beer, along with vegetables and crafts during the local farmers’ market and the root beer was a big hit and then we got invited to have a booth at the fair and try it there and now it has been our number one product,” said Darby. From then on, Darby has sold his homemade root beer at a booth at the Fayette County Fair. Now his root beer has been called “Fair Famous Root Beer” by locals and is a must-have during the fair.

“We also introduced root beer floats in 2017, a big mistake on our end. We never have enough product on hand to accommodate the demand for it,” said Darby. Speaking of root beer floats, this year Darby is introducing three new root beer float flavors which will be brownie sundae, salted caramel, and campfire along with special mugs. “We pre-ordered special mugs for last year to celebrate our five years with the fair, but of course, we just won’t count 2020 so we will have those mugs this year,” said Darby.

At this year’s fair along with the new root beer float flavors he will be introducing about 12 to 15 new products such as root beer popsicles. Plus, there will be handmade waffle cones and bowls, hand-spun cotton candy in four unique flavors: root beer (of course), birthday cake, strawberry, and raspberry, and two popular items in Thailand, along with imports from Thailand. Also not only has his menu grown but his booth size has changed from a 10x10 booth to a 26x10 booth.

The farm’s motto “We’re Not Just a Farm. We’re Much More!” could not be any truer. Not only is Darby and his farm involved with root beer and the fair faves, but also handmade soaps, candles, bath bombs, Thailand products, a variety of food, baked goods, and so much more. All foods and baked goods items are made out of his kitchen on his farm and he built and designed a special workshop on the farm for the handmade soaps, candles, bath bombs, and more.
