Picnic Season is Back

The Summer Church Picnic Season came back this year after most of the celebrations were canceled last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A few local parishes decided to cancel their parish picnics once again this year. Those included St. John the Baptist in Ammannsville, St. Rose of Lima in Schulenburg. Others held a drive-through meal and a raffle, such as the Queen of the Holy Rosary’s Spring Picnic in Hostyn and the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church Picnic in Dubina.

Some, however, opted to return to normal. Thousands attended the St. John Picnic on July 4, where the parish sold more than 4,500 meal plates. A slightly smaller crowd attended the Moravia Picnic on July 18, where a quilt sold for $10,000 in the auction.

Looking ahead, the 166th Annual Prazska Pout (aka The Praha Picnic) will take place on its usual date of Aug. 15, which is the Feast Day for the Assumption of Mary, patron saint of the Praha church. That day happens to fall on a Sunday this year.

St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellinger will hold their Annual Bazaar and Raffle on Aug. 22. The fried chicken and sausage meal will be drivethrough only. There will be an online auction and raffle. Visit https://stmaryellinger.com/annual-bazaar-raffle for more information.

The Cistern Church Picnic at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church is scheduled for Aug. 22 as well.

St. Mary Catholic Church in High Hill plans to bring back their picnic this year on Sunday, Sept. 5. Several other church picnics are scheduled take place across the area that day as well, including those at St. John the Baptist in Fayetteville, Sacred Heart in Hallettsville and the Fall Picnic at Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Shiner.
