As H.S. Volleyball Season Arrives, Schulenburg Gym Still Being Repaired from Winter Storm

Practice for high school volleyball season begins Monday and scrimmages begin later in the week.

Over in Schulenburg, those events will be in the old gym because the new high school gym is still dealing with the aftermath of February’s freeze.

During that winter storm a pipe busted near the gym, flooding the area, and causing the wood floor to buckle.

The day after graduation they pulled the floor up only to find there was still water under there.

The drying out process took longer than expected. Shipping delays on the maple floor replacement pushed back the renovation work even farther.

Superintendent Duane Limbaugh said that the hope now is to have the new gym floor in place for the varsity volleyball tournament Schulenburg is hosting Aug. 19.

Meanwhile, the old gym floor didn’t go to waste.

The school let anyone who wanted some get large sections of the gym floor.

Limbaugh said it was all picked up and many people planned to make table tops from the old gym floor, including basketball coach Richard Hoogendoorn.

The middle section of the gym floor that included a rendering of the school mascot was donated to the booster club.
