All-Star Round-Up

The district-only all-star baseball and softball tournaments are over, but the international tournaments are just beginning. Here’s a roundup of local action: • The La Grange minor baseball team has started its tournament in Brenham with two wins, a 12-2 victory over Burleson County and a 6-0 win over Hempstead.
It’s Already Been a Long, Hot Summer

La Grange Fire Department put out a fire that burned about two-and-a-half acres on Makinson Rd. near West Point last Friday, June 17.
Juneteenth Celebrated in La Grange

Juneteenth celebrations took place in La Grange on Saturday, June 18. The day kicked off with a parade through La Grange, starting near La Grange Elementary School and ending west of the Courthouse. The parade consisted of 18 lively entries led by a La Grange fire truck carrying Mayor Jan Dockery and Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Weishuhn. Several local youth groups and civic organizations took part. There were also motorcycles, classic cars and an equestrian group.
From Chicago to Fayette County Via the Clarinet

Max Reese, a 23-year-old clarinet player from Chicago, made the move from the big city to small-town Round Top for the summer. Alongside other top student musicians from around the world, Reese will be participating in the orchestra at the Round Top Festival Institute. Reese is using this experience to prepare for his future, in which he aspires to be a professional orchestra musician.
Woman Injured in Hostyn Church Explosion Remains in ICU

The woman injured in the explosion at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn last Thursday remains in critical condition this week. Her son told the Record on Monday that she remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Dell Seton Hospital in Austin.
Hostyn-Plum Group Volunteers in New Castle, PA

Ten teens and four adults from Fayette County are doing a service/learning week in New Castle, Penn., as part of the Catholic Heart Workcamp program. The locals are from Queen of the Holy Rosary in Hostyn and Sts. Peter and Paul in Plum. They have been working at disadvantaged homes and charitable organizations along with hundreds of other teams from around the country. New Castle, for a variety of reasons, has the dubious distinction of being named “the worst place to live in Pennsylvania.” It is in the far western part of the state near Ohio. Catholic Heart Workcamp is the same organization that brought hundreds of teens to help in La Grange in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
La Grange Council Members Take Oath

The newly-elected and re-elected La Grange City Council members took their oaths of office on Monday, June 13. Pictured (from left) are Councilmember Ward 2 Violet Zbranek, Councilmember Ward 1 Kathy Weishuhn, newly-elected Councilmember Ward 4 Arthur Bosque, Councilmember Ward 3 Dustin Littrell and Councilmember Ward 4 Quenten Gonzalez. Also on Monday night, the Council voted unanimously to appoint Weishuhn as the new mayor pro tem. She takes the place of John “Honza” Cernosek as mayor pro tem. Library Summer Reading Program Begins

The Fayette Public Library’s free summer reading program began this week, with the kickoff event on Wednesday, June 8. A big crowd, shown above, showed up. The theme for the program this summer is ‘Oceans of Possibilities’ and will feature exciting seathemed activities for children of all ages throughout the summer. Animal Shelter Update

As of Feb. 16, the total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 170: 99 dogs and 71 cats in need. As of Feb. 16, the shelter has 88 animals in care: 53 dogs/35 cats.
