Why Erwin Sladek’s Work Ethic Just Won’t Quit

There’s more to the big man walking across his pasture after checking his cows than meets the eye. Erwin Sladek Jr., a former La Grange High School football star, Vietnam veteran and La Grange Independent School District educator, isn’t content raising a few cattle. While many senior citizens nearing their mid-70s look forward to taking life a little slower, he has too many commitments to slow down unless a health issue like back surgery temporarily sidelines him.
Decision 2022: Landslides & Close Calls

Municipal, school board and constitutional amendment elections took place Saturday, May 7. Fayette County voters overwhelmingly approved the two constitutional amendment propositions that were on the ballot. Both passed statewide with more than 80 percent of the vote. Proposition 1 extends statewide property tax relief passed in 2019 to elderly and disabled property owners whose taxes were frozen. Fayette Coun-ty voters approved it by a vote of 2,059-274. Proposition 2 raised the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $40,000. It passed in Fayette County by a vote of 2,063-310.
County Begins Move-In at Pioneer Building

The Fayette County Auditor’s Office began moving furniture to their new home inside the old Pioneer Bank Building. The building will now be known as the Fayette County Main Street Annex.

Early Morning Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred Friday morning in La Grange. At about 8 a.m. a 2017 Nissan Rogue driven by Heather Marie Wallace, 30, of La Grange, failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign at the intersection of Jefferson and Milam Streets. She struck a 2019 Ford pick-up driven by Eamon McCourt, 56, of Schulenburg, who was traveling north on Jefferson. Wallace had minor injuries and McCourt was uninjured. The Difference the MS 150 Makes

The Texas MS 150 came back to Fayette County last weekend after a two year break. The number of riders was down from it’s peak a few years ago. But it still brought quite a spectacle to La Grange and the north end of the county.
Survivor – Schulenburg Junior High Style

Jearline Wick, a teacher’s aide at Schulenburg Junior High rubs her hands together after “spinning” the wheel that’s been a daily part of the Survivor-themed Teacher Appreciation Week festivities at Schulenburg Junior High. Every day every teacher on campus spun the wheel and sometimes they would get prizes, sometimes they would get challenges to earn points towards bigger prizes. Often the challenges involved expressing appreciation or doing something nice for their co-workers. “We’ve been working really hard and we have such a great staff, this is just one way to celebrate that,” said principal Callene Zapalac.

A quilt titled “All Will be Good” proved to be just that. It recently won Best of Category Hand Quilted, Piecework at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Prep Work at Massive Solar Site Begins; 600,000 Modules Coming

Representatives from the 7V Solar Ranch near Muldoon presented an update to the Fayette County Commissioners Court on Thursday, April 28. The 300 megawatt solar power installation will be built on four sites spanning 1,600 acres in the Muldoon area.
6,000 Cyclists Descend on La Grange

About 6,000 cyclists descended on La Grange for the Texas MS 150 over the weekend. The ride, which raises money to fight multiple sclerosis, last took place in 2019.
Bluff’s Inaugural ‘History on Tap’ Details Finalized

Brewing has been a Texas tradition since at least the mid-1800s, and one that German immigrant Heinrich Kreische embraced on his own property in the 1860s and 70s. By 1878, Kreische’s brewery--now a state historic site— produced enough to rank as the third largest operation in Texas.

For this type of celebration a simple ribbon cutting would not do. To celebrate the merger of Farmers Lumber Company and Round Top Mercantile Wednesday, they used a circular saw to cut a ceremonial board that had been signed by lots of the folks involved in the deal.
Sodek Named Sole Finalist for Flatonia Superintendent Job

Flatonia didn’t have to look far to find its new superintendent. Longtime Flatonia administrator and current interim superintendent Chris Sodek was named the sole finalist for the job at a special meeting held Thursday by the school’s board of trustees.
Train Strikes Truck Carrying Two

A train struck a commercial vehicle on the tracks near the intersection of Fayette and Mechanic St. in Fayetteville Saturday morning, April 23. The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash, but the report was not available in time for this publication. Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department responded. Fayetteville Fire Chief Randy Noviskie said the truck driver and his son, who was a passenger, were transported to St. Mark’s Hospital by Fayette County EMS with non-life threatening injuries. FHS vs. SHS Softball The Flatonia softball team defeated Schulenburg 7-1 Friday in a tiebreaker game to decide the final playoff team out of District 29-2A.
Fayetteville Boys, RT-C Girls Win Area Track Team Titles

The 2022 Area 29-30A track meet was held in Fayetteville Wednesday. The top four finishers in each event advance to regionals on April 29-30 in Webster. The Fayetteville Lions won the boys division while Round Top-Carmine won the girls team title, with Fayetteville the runner-up.
Concrete Flies as Overpass Struck in Schulenburg – Again

A piece of heavy equipment traveling on US 77 struck the top of the underpass in Schulenburg Wednesday afternoon, April 20. The impact knocked down several chunks of concrete from the bridge overhead.

To the Editor: I’m writing pertaining to the historic Knesek Building in Fayetteville. Yes, it’s sad to see it go but what was the alternative? Let it sit until it collapsed? I’m certain the seller was glad to get it off his hands.
