The American Legion Post No. 102 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 102 will meet for their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 p.m. at the VFW Home located at Veterans Memorial Drive at the Fair Grounds in La Grange. The Auxiliary Scholarships will be awarded to the recipients by the Unit prior to the meeting. The Unit will review and update the Constitution, By-Laws and the Standing Rules. The Unit’s election of Officers’ will also take place. Members are encouraged to attend and new potential members are always invited to attend. A light meal will be served.
The La Grange Senior Citizen Activity Center Inc. will host the first game day on Thursday, May 9, from 9 until 11:30 a.m. at the City of La Grange Randolph Recreation Center. Guild Bake Sale
The Mt. Calvary Mary Martha Guild will host its annual Mother’s Day Bake Sale in front of National Bank & Trust on the courthouse square on Friday, May 10 beginning at 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. or until sold out. Baked goods available will include cakes, pies, brownies, cookies, cupcakes and other home baked items. Free will donations. Funds raised will support various local outreach projects. Be sure to come early and surprise Mom with a treat.
There’s more The La Grange Post Office will be participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 11. Please put out a bag of non-perishable food items near your mailbox and your carrier will pick up on Saturday, May 11 and bring back to the Post Office. All collected items will be taken to the local AMEN Food Pantry to be distributed to people in need within the local area. You can also bring your items into the La Grange Post Office and drop off any time from now up until the day of collection. This drive will help many needy families within the county.
Farmers Market
The Winchester Farmers Market will be held Saturday, May 11 at Zilss Hall beginning at 8:30 a.m. until noon. Enjoy seasonal vegetables, crafts, jewelry, baked goods and many homemade items.
Chess Tournament
The La Grange Chess Club is sponsoring a chess tournament to benefit Fayette County Habitat for Humanity. The tournament will be held on Saturday, May 11 at the Randolph Recreation Center located at 653 E. Pearl St. in La Grange. There will be 3 rounds (G15). Players will compete in two age divisions; primary ages 5-16 and senior ages 17 and up. Entry is $15 and may be paid at check-in at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is highly recommended as space is limited. St. James BBQ & Bake Sale
The St. James Episcopal Men’s Club (Holy Smokers) will hold a BBQ and the women will hold a bake sale on Saturday, May 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out, at 156 N. Monroe St. across from H-E-B. A half chicken is $6 and sausage link is $7, drive through only. This barbecue is for the benefit of Parents as Teachers.
Prairie Blume Literary Society Meeting The meeting of the Prairie Blume Literary Society will be held on May 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fayette Public Library. Everyone interested in local history and literature is invited to attend. Membership in the Society is open to everyone; please invite anyone who might be interested, and is not already being notified, to attend this meeting if they would like to do so. The program will be a presentation by Betsy Wagner. Wagner began writing in 2008, when she retired from a career in education. She has completed four books which inform her readers of life in the Republic of Texas. She considers her writing to be a bridge between the past and the future. She will explain this connection at the Prairie Bloome Literary Society meeting at the La Grange Library on May 11. Hot Dogs & Bake Sale
St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinger will have a hot dog sale and bake sale on Saturday, May 11 with serving beginning at 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Bake sale is a free will donation. Proceeds will benefit future ministries. For more information, call (979) 966-7710 or (979) 702-5192.
Plum Hermann Sons Life
The Plum Hermann Sons Life May meeting will be held Monday, May 13 at 5 p.m. at the Prairie Valley Schoolhouse, 2510 Williams Rd, in West Point. Meal and dessert will be provided.
Retired Teachers Meeting
The Fayette County Retired Teachers’Association will meet on Monday, May 13 at the New Life Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, located at 1215 Von Minden in La Grange. Fellowship time is 1:30 p.m. and meeting begins at 2 p.m.All retired public school employees are encouraged to attend, even if retired from another city, county, or state. The Lee County Senior Center located at 165 W. Austin St. in Giddings will host Country Music Monday featuring Ken Brothers on Monday, May 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Free-will donations will be accepted.

Farm Bureau Food Pantry Benefit Fayette County Farm Bureau is hosting a Food Pantry Benefit drive-thru meal at the La Grange KC Hall on Tuesday, May 21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The meal will be chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable medley, and roll. The cost is $12 per plate and will be drive thru only. Tickets are available to purchase at the Farm Bureau office, 411 E. Colorado St. in La Grange or from a Fayette County Farm Bureau board member. All proceeds from the meal are to benefit the area food pantries with Fayette County Farm Bureau matching up to $5,000.
