Karstedt and Justus are Top Grads in Fayetteville

Fayetteville High School will be the first county school to hold graduation ceremonies for their seniors, with their commencement set for this Friday, May 21, by invitation only. Valedictorian is Madelyn Karstedt, daughter of John and Bonny Karstedt.
Samaritan’s Purse Wraps Up It’s 20th, and Final, Hope Hill House

The faith within a person can make anything possible, the love within a neighborhood can make things easier, but hope, well hope within a community makes it all come together. A huge part of that hope for the perfectly named Hope Hill community was done by Samaritan’s Purse and just this past week they wrapped up their 20th and final home at Hope Hill.

Shorthorns Earn State’s Top Student Assistant & Top Assistant Coach Honors

TJ Medina, senior manager for the Schulenburg Shorthorns, was selected “Student Assistant of the Year” by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches for the 20-21 season. TJ was one of only 10 students to receive this honor state wide. TJ also assisted the Shorthorns in football, track, and baseball.
Barnes’ Playoff Shutout Earns Him County Athlete of the Week Honors

La Grange sophomore pitcher Trenton Barnes came through in the clutch for Leopards baseball Saturday, tossing a complete game shutout in game three of a playoff series against Salado in order to survive and advance. “His overall performance this year’s been solid,” said La Grange head baseball coach Robert Barber. “Young kid still learning the game, still growing in the game. We’ve gotten a lot out of him this year. He came into the year with a little bit of an arm issue and we’ve kind of worked him back slowly. It’s taken a little bit of time. But here lately, he’s just been fabulous on the mound. We gave him the ball the other day with our season on the line and he accepted the challenge. Went out and just completely dominated a very good Salado team.” Not knowing he was going to pitch the series rubber match until right before, Barnes filled the stat sheet with four surrendered hits, nine strikeouts, and no walks in a ‘win or go home’ outing. “If that young man can continue to do that as he gets older, he’s going to be very, very special to this program.” Barnes’ ability to step up big when it mattered has landed him the go-ahead for this edition’s Player of the Week.
Bridge Work From Overhead

Bridge builders working under general contractor Angel Brothers Construction are about a third of the way through the project to expand the Travis Street bridge across the Colorado River in La Grange, according to a construction report on the Texas Department of Transportation website. The $13.6 million project involves building a new bridge that will eventually serve eastbound traffic on the bridge. But first, it will serve both directions of traffic while workers will refurbish the old truss bridge. Once complete, the old truss bridge will serve westbound traffic, allowing for separated lanes of traffic. Construction began on Nov. 9, 2020. St. Mark’s Welcome Back Event Held

A big crowd showed up Tuesday for what was billed as a “Welcome Back Community Celebration” at St. Mark’s Medical Center. The gathering had several focuses. It was part celebration of the hospital’s recent ranking among the Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital’s in the United States by the Chartis Center for Rural Health and part celebration of the reopening of the hospital in a more public sense to volunteers and visitors as the COVID crisis lessens. A Silver-Studded State Meet for Leps

On the state’s biggest track and field stage Thursday, five La Grange Leopards brought home silver medals from the state meet. The La Grange 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams and pole vaulter Dylan Truss all turned in their best-ever performances to claim state runner-up finishes.
Schulenburg’s Limbaugh Second in State in 3200

Schulenburg’s Taylor Limbaugh and Flatonia’s Ali Janecka participated in the Class 2A state track and field championships Friday morning, which were held at the University of Texas. Lady Horns track star and Texas Tech University commit Taylor Limbaugh ran in the 3200 meter contest Friday morning and finished in second place, lunging past Wink high school’s Autumn Smith by .008 seconds to grasp the silver medal with a time of 11 minutes and 38.70 seconds.
Leps End Baseball Postseason Drought

It was a celebration eight years in the making. La Grange had not won a baseball playoff series since their 2013 state title year, but that drought ended in dramatic fashion Saturday as the Leps overcame Salado in an epic best-of-three series.
Round Top Celebrates 150th Anniversary

The biggest little town in Texas, Round Top, population 90, celebrated its 150th anniversary party with a day full of celebrations all across town. The events started at the town square at 10 a.m. There were multiple concerts, tours and historical events, and kids activities. Here are some images of the festivities.
Moerbe Honored for 33 Years of Service to the City of La Grange

La Grange City Staff held a retirement party for outgoing Mayor Janet Moerbe, who has served the City for 33 years, first as a city councilwoman and the last 20 years as Mayor. The celebration took place Friday afternoon on the grounds of the La Grange Public Library. City employees and officials from other local governments stopped by to congratulate Moerbe on her retirement. She presided over one more City Council meeting on Monday, May 10. A 21-year-old man from Dime Box died in a crash on State Highway 71 Tuesday morning, May 4. According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the wreck happened at 8:13 a.m.

Unmarked Children’s Graves In Dubina Get New Headstones

Dubina was started in 1856. And after some people passed away, they were buried next to what now is FM 1383 in Dubina. As Dubina started to grow, there was a need for a permanent cemetery. In 1866 Joseph Peter and Ignac Muzny donated land for the current cemetery. As Dubina continued to grow, a church was established in 1877. By the late 1880s the church grew to over 600 families.
Fallen Tree Blocks Road

County Commissioner Jason McBroom showed up with a chainsaw Saturday morning to remove a cedar that fell across Raymond Rd. and held back a number of motorists that were stuck between the tree and the train blocking an alternative route on Zilss Rd. “How impressive is it when you see one of our County Commissioners come out with a chain saw to help the neighbors move the tree.
