Weather Disaster Declared Day Before More Treacherous Storms Move In

Fayette County Commissioners Court voted last Thursday to declare a state of disaster due the May 18 storm that produced a recently-confirmed tornado. That declaration came a day before another powerful storm which tore through the County Friday night, May 28.

Trees in Median, Brick Walkways Downtown?

The City of La Grange will apply for a $779,000 grant to build pedestrian safety improvements in downtown. The improvements would include a median on Travis Street from Jefferson to Main Street and enhanced crosswalks around the courthouse square.
Ellinger Officials Take Office

Krissalynn Henderson was a leading sprinter for the Dodge City Community College women’s track and field team this season. The freshman out of La Grange High School competed in the 200- and 400-meter races.
SATURATION FRUSTRATION

A local truck driver required rescue after floodwaters swept his semi rig into Cummins Creek near Ledbetter on Monday, May 26. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m.
Changing of the Guard

Jan Dockery took the oath of office as the new Mayor of La Grange on Monday night, May 24. Former Mayor Janet Moerbe, who did not seek re-election this year, administered the oath. Moerbe had been part of City government for 33 years, starting out on the Council and having served as mayor since 2001.
LHS Student Places at State

On Saturday, May 1, LHS freshman Landon von Minden and LHS junior Amanda Urban competed at the UIL State Current Issues and Events meet at Liberty Hill High School. This year, the State academic meet was held at various sub-hubs throughout Texas, and contest materials were sent to a central location for scoring. When results were finalized the following week, von Minden’s score had earned him the 3rd place medal in Class 4A. Faldyn’s Artwork Sells for $22,000

On Sunday, May 16, La Grange High School’s Lauren Faldyn’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Western Art piece was selected for the 2021 School Art Auction. Roughly 15,000 high school students in Texas make a piece for this competition every year. She placed 22nd overall in the competition and her work sold at auction for $22,000. “What an amazing accomplishment for this LHS student,” said La Grange art teacher Jack Vollbaum.
Ellinger to Purchase its First City Hall Thanks to Donation

An $18,300 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will help the newly incorporated City of Ellinger establish its first city hall. The Community Development Partnership grant, paired with matching funds of $4,575, will allow the Fayette County community of about 200 residents to purchase a portable building to house city records and act as a hub for city-related business.

Mother Nature Plays Ring Toss

Kyle Guenther shared this photo of a round bale hay ring stuck in a tree by high winds in the Middle Creek area of Southern Fayette County last Tuesday where tornadoes were sighted. Guenther said one barn was also destroyed there and windows busted out in several locations.

Wind and Water: Too Much, Too Fast

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported three tornado sightings in the southern part of the County during the storm that passed through the area Tuesday evening, May 18. Strong winds toppled trees and power lines and damaged some light buildings.

FEC: Three Poles Downed by Storm

Gary Don Nietsche, General Manager at Fayette Electric Cooperative, reported that crews and contractor crews responded to outages from the storms that moved through the Cooperative’s service territory Tuesday evening. Rain, lightning and high winds primarily impacted members in Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca counties. Damage from a tornado observed near Swiss Alp between Schulenburg and La Grange on Highway 77 snapped two power poles just north of FM 956 and Hwy 77. Another pole snapped near Berger Road between Hwy 77 and Ammannsville as a result of the tornado.
Rain the Issue in La Grange

Storm-related problems Tuesday in La Grange were a result of too much water coming down too fast. Flooded homes, a washed out railroad track and a pair of water rescues ensued in the city limits.

10-Year Sentence in Drunk Driving Fatality

The 155th District Court sentenced a drunk driver to 10 years in state prison for killing a local firefighter and businessman in 2022. Taylor Levick, 24 of Woodsboro, pleaded no contest to intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony, during a hearing before District Judge Jeff Steinhauser on Wednesday, Jan. 3.
