The start of October marks the countdown to Halloween and the fun activities, events, and celebrations everyone looks forward to. However, will Halloween this year be a trick or a treat as the CDC puts out their guidelines on how we should celebrate Halloween?
Opinions Differ as Antiquers Return for Fall

Not all antiques vendors in north Fayette County are happy about the County allowing the Fall Antiques Show to proceed later this month amidst the coronavirus pandemic. “We’ve been closed since March for a very good reason,” said Danny Smith, co-owner of Carmine Antiques.
FEC, Out of Room, Considering Move

The La Grange City Council granted a request from Fayette Electric Cooperative to rezone two lots on North Von Minden Road from residential to commercial. The two properties lie next to FEC’s pole yard. FEC General Manager Gary Don Nietsche told the Record Monday that the Coop may eventually move its offices from downtown La Grange to the Von Minden Road property.
Second Chance Donates $10,000 To Local Fire Departments

Second Chance Emporium recently donated $1,000 to each of the ten volunteer fire departments in Fayette County. Since most of the departments were unable to hold their usual fundraisers this year, support from the community is needed more than ever. 4-H Week Proclaimed, Students Honored

Fayette County Commissioners heard annual reports last Thursday from the 11 4-H Clubs in Fayette County. Representatives from each club reported on their activities over the past year. Fayette County has one of the most active 4-H programs in the region, with clubs in Fayetteville, Flatonia, La Grange, Round Top-Carmine, Schulenburg and Winchester. 4-H also has a county-wide horse club, a shooting sports club and the new Grow Wings 4-H Club, which is dedicated to youth with disabilities. After the presentations, Commissioners signed a proclamation designating the week of Oct. 4-10 as 4-H Week in Fayette County. “You are a very positive part of this community and we’ll always be behind you,” said Pct. 4 Commissioner Tom Muras. LG-Native Kocian Named Game Warden of the Year

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is proud to recognize Victoria County game warden John Kocian as its recipient of the 2020 Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Officer of the Year Award. Kocian graduated from La Grange High School in 1997 and earned his degree in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University in 2002. Kocian was accepted into the 49th Texas Game Warden Academy class and graduated in 2003. Kocian has served the communities in Victoria County for 17 years. Jon and his wife Amanda have three children, Aubrey, Chelsey, and Kyle. Jon is the son of Virginia Kocian and the late Ed Kocian of La Grange and the grandson of the late Ed and Victoria Matocha of La Grange.

School Construction 90% Done

The La Grange Independent School Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting Monday, with a lot on their plate. Here’s a roundup of some of their actions: Superintendent Contract The board approved the 2020-2021 contract for Superintendent William Wagner with a 4% annual increase of $5,480 and an automobile allowance of $6,600.
Bus Compartments Hold a Surprise

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on Sunday at 1:55 p.m. Reserve Drug Interdiction Investigator Jeremy Ellison conducted a traffic stop on a bus traveling west on I-10 for a traffic violation. The driver gave inconsistent stories about his travel pattern and other criminal indicators were observed. Consent to search the bus was given and during the search concealed compartments were located. Deputy Terry Guentert assisted at the scene along with Flatonia P.D. Officer Chris Kucera. Ellison located several vacuumed sealed packages in a sealed compartment, which contained $186,070 in U.S. currency. Drug Interdiction Investigators David Smith and Sgt. Randy Thumann also responded and assisted. Arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center was 55 yr. old Jose Luis Salazar of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Salazar was charged with money laundering. There were four passengers on the bus who were released.
Cravens Crowned New Schützenkönig

The 148th annual Round Top Schützenfest proved to be an exciting and entertaining day for the members of the Round Top Rifle Hall and their families. The annual shooting contest for Round Top Rifle Association members was held on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

Historical Marker Dedicated At Old Fayette County Jail

Since March the Texas Heroes Museum in downtown La Grange had been closed because of pandemic precautions. But for one day, Saturday, the treasured history and artifacts of Texas Heroes that are on display inside the museum – which is housed in the Old Fayette County jail –was open again for a celebratory occasion.
Two Free Lectures Spotlight New Exhibits at Quilt Museum

The Texas Quilt Museum gives quilt aficionados two opportunities to see new exhibits and hear more about them –for free. On Saturday, September 26 at 3 pm, noted art quilt collector Frank Klein will speak on avian behavior and showcase his bird photography in conjunction with the exhibit “Flying High: For the Love of Birds.” The exhibit features 41 quilts curated by Museum codirectors Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes.

The number of unemployment claims in Fayette County rose two weeks in a row after dropping steadily since mid-July. The Texas Workforce Commission reported 30 new claims for the week of Sept.

Homecoming Week in La Grange

Members of the La Grange High School Senior class released balloons at the conclusion of Wednesday night’s community pep rally – an annual tradition. Most of the balloons were purple or white, but there was one large gold balloon, far left, shaped in the letter ‘K’ released by the family of the Kyla Drozd, who was a member of this class of students but passed away earlier this year. As part of Wednesday’s event, the homecoming beau and sweetheart nominees were announced. The winners will be announced before Friday’s football game. County Wants to Fix Crossings

Fayette County hopes to get a big share of the $4.3 billion in federal hazard mitigation grant funding awarded to the State of Texas. Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau told the Commissioners at a special meeting Tuesday morning that the County could apply for up to $100 million of those federal funds.

Flatonia named the 2020 Homecoming Queen, Jessica Pope, and Homecoming King, Izick Hernandez, at Friday night’s football game, which the Bulldogs won 34-7. More on that game on Page B2 today.
Ellinger Couple Die from Explosion; Cause Determined

Michael and Mazie Hess of Ellinger died Thursday, two days after they were both seriously injured after a massive explosion caused by a propane leak leveled their home. Both Michael, 79, and Mazie, 81, were pulled from the rubble by neighbors and flown by helicopter to Austin where they underwent surgeries, but their injuries ultimately proved to be fatal.
