Jury Trials Headed to Church for Social Distancing

At a meeting last Wednesday, Fayette County Commissioners roughed out a plan to declare the old La Grange First Baptist Church as a district court auxiliary branch location. The designation will allow District Judge Jeff Steinhauser to hold jury trials at the former church sanctuary.
Schmeckenfest is Thursday in LG

This Thursday, Dec. 3. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the 13th annual wassail tasting and Christmas extravaganza Schmeckenfest 2020 will be hosted on the Fayette County Courthouse Square and will be adapted to meet social distancing and safety standards. There will be different wassails to sample from over 20 local participating businesses and organizations, paperless voting for your favorite wassail by app, delicious holiday treats for sale, and giveaways.
Injured Owl Saved by LGPD

This little owl was in the La Grange Walmart parking lot over the weekend, cold and wet with an injured wing. Members of the La Grange Police Department were able to get it in a pet carrier and called for an animal rescue volunteer who will be taking it to a bird rescue center in Austin.

Texas Ramp Project Celebrates Milestone

The Texas Ramp Project (TRP) celebrated building “100 Miles of Freedom” on Nov. 15. The statewide organization estimates that since TRP’s inception in 2006, its more than 3,500 volunteers have built 100 miles of ramps for people who use wheelchairs and walkers.
VFW Post Celebrates 75th Anniversary

On November 17, 2020, District Commander Dave Walden presented a certificate to Fayette Memorial VFW Post 5254 congratulating the post upon the occasion of its 75th anniversary. With Boatramp Closed, Northside Park Is Now the Place to Go for River Access

The Colorado River boat ramp in La Grange will be closed for the next 18 months, but folks who like to kayak and canoe can now access the river at Northside Park. Workers from the City of La Grange carved a canoe and kayak launch into the river bank last week.

Pandemic Takes Toll On Area’s Sales Tax

La Grange will struggle to reach $2 million in sales tax for 2020, another grim indicator of the pandemic’s powerful punch. City sales tax revenue hasn’t been below $2 million since 2017, but November’s rebate from the state was down again from last year.

County Offering In-Home Testing

Fayette County officials began offering free in-home coronavirus testing on November 16. Funding provided by a private grant will allow residents to be tested for COVID-19 without having to leave their homes.
Ellinger Leaders Begin Forming New City Government

Ellinger residents voted to incorporate their small town in the Nov. 3 election by a vote of 76-44. The community will be incorporated as a Class C municipality under Texas law, governed by a mayor and two city commissioners.
