Bias Depends On Viewpoint
To the editor:
The Opinion letter of Nov. 24 warns us of bias and misinformation in the media. The author is obviously well acquainted with both. His only example of media bias overreach is reporting about the Dominion voting machines by Fox News. He could have also mentioned the reporting by most other media that Hunter Biden’s laptop as Russian disinformation, or their silence about the tens of millions of dollars from foreign countries that has flowed to the Biden family through an elaborate scheme of shell companies for unknown reasons.
The author’s facts about oil production are also selected to fit his agenda. It is true that 2023 U.S. oil production may hit an all time high this year. It is also true that Biden campaigned on putting oil companies out of business and has done all he could do to fulfill that promise. U.S. oil production increased about 30% during the previous administration and has remained relatively flat during the Biden years. 2023 oil production may exceed the previous high set in 2019 but by only a small amount. Fortunately for most of us the federal government has little control over oil production on state and private lands.
That we are facing the worst inflation in history is a claim that I have never heard. Cumulative inflation for the four years of the previous administration was 7.5%. That is bad enough. Cumulative inflation for the three years of the current administration is 17%. At the current rate it will be about 20% for Biden’s four years. Record setting or not I don’t like what the current administration has done to the value of our money.
The author’s final example of misinformation refers to the holy grail of climate change. Yes, the earth has been getting warmer in recent years. What is causing it, and what we can do about it is less certain. I do not doubt that human activity may have some role in it. If we pave enough of the earth with concrete, asphalt and roof tops, plow enough of the tall grass prairie to grow corn to burn ethanol in our cars, dig enough dirt to mine rare earth minerals to make batteries for our electric vehicles, and cut down enough rain forest we might have some effect on the climate. But, are humans the primary cause of the current climate change? I don’t know. I do know that the earth’s climate has always been changing without any help from us. They were farming in Greenland 1,000 years ago.
