Dog Found After Fleeing From I-10 Collision

Fayette County DPS Trooper April Galvan took a call of a rollover collision last Friday on I-10 at the 672 mile marker. During the collision a Doberman was thrown from the vehicle. Although a search was done at the scene, the dog was not located. Sunday) 911 received a call of an injured dog on I-10. Trooper Galvan was able to locate the injured dog and took it to a local vet. The owner was notified in Houston and was enroute back to Fayette County.
Schulenburg Falls in State Semis

The Schulenburg boys basketball team took on Grapeland High School Tuesday night in a state semifinal contest that was held at the Campbell Center of Aldine and fell short with a final score of 74-60.
Horns’ Versatile Giant Alex Lozano Is Fayette County Athlete the Week

Schulenburg senior basketball player Alex Lozano is a 6’8” center that flourishes in all parts of the game. He utilizes his long arms for rebounding and blocking shots and also has one of, if not the best, three point stroke on the team. Lozano played a key part in the Shorthorns road to the state tournament by hitting clutch shots in the postseason and causing problems for teams down in the paint and low block. The game of basketball is evolving in a way that big men are beginning to develop an outside shot at the college and pro level, but to have a player with Lozano’s height and skill set from the perimeter at the high school level is rare. The body of work he has produced in a phenomenal season for the Shorthorns. Lozano is this edition’s Player of the Week.
Bill Filed to Ban 18-Wheelers on Bluff

Texas Senator Lois Kolkhorst filed a bill last Thursday that would make it possible for Fayette County officials to restrict commercial truck traffic on the Bluff south of La Grange. For years, many local residents have wished for a mandatory truck route that send 18-wheelers around the curvy switchbacks on US 77 south of the Colorado River Bridge.
41 Remaining Empty Hope Hill Lots Donated to City

Samaritans Purse will donate 41 empty lots in the Hope Hill subdivision to the City of La Grange. The La Grange City Council signed a memorandum of agreement with Samaritan’s Purse following an executive session at the City Council meeting Monday night, March 8.

Stolen Vehicle Left to Burn by Driver

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on Tuesday afternoon around 5:53 pm the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a vehicle fire on I-10 W/B at the 665 mile marker near Flatonia. The Flatonia Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene. Upon arrival it was reported a pickup truck was fully engulfed. Deputies A.J. Gonzales, Seth Nagel, and Drug Interdiction Investigator Jeramy Ellison responded to the scene and assisted with traffic control. It was reported to Law Enforcement the driver had left the scene in another vehicle. When the license plate was checked on the 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck it had been reported stolen in the morning from Austin. The truck fire spread to the grass median and was quickly extinguished. The truck was a total loss and the Austin Police Department was notified of the recovered stolen vehicle.

The Schulenburg High School boy’s basketball team took on Sabinal in a regional semifinal contest Tuesday night held at San Antonio Wagner High School and stayed hot by picking up another win and advancing to the regional finals.
LG Girls Soccer Improves to 6-1 in District

The La Grange girls soccer team rocked Rockdale 7-0 Tuesday, March 2 on the road. Kaelyn Ortiz scored two goals, and single goals were scored by Jolie Gutierrez, Yesenia Martinez, Megan Davis, McKenna Head and Ellee Sodolak.
Bryce Wilson New County Athlete of the Week After Leading ‘Horns Playoff Push

Schulenburg basketball player Bryce Wilson has had an exceptional season as a whole, but has really turned on the jets in the postseason. Wilson has scored in doublefigures at least twice throughout the playoffs and drained 28 points in the Horns’ previous regional semifinal game against Sabinal, which was held at San Antonio Wagner High School.
LG Dance Team Wins Top Awards

On February 27, the La Grange High School Leopardette Drill Team brought home several awards after competing in the Showtime International Austin Championship Drill Team Competition at Temple High School in Temple. The Leopardettes earned sweepstakes for receiving Division 1 ratings for their outstanding performances in their pom, jazz and lyrical routines. The drill team also received the best in category for all three dances, along with the judge’s award for the lyrical. The Leopardette Drill Team began competing in 2019. This year, they brought home their first ever Team Champion Circle Award. This is the second highest team award of the contest and is considered runner-up to team grand champion. “Congratulations and hats off to these ladies for their commitment, hard work and dedication to the Leopardette Drill Team. LGISD is honored to have them representing our district,” said Becky Little, director of the Leopardette Drill Team.
Twilight Zoning

A big crowd showed up at the Schulenburg City Council meeting Monday night, March 1, to speak about a rezoning request for The Texan Travel Center that developers plan to build at the corner of Interstate 10 and US 77. The Yorktown-based Texan Stores company asked the City to rezone the property from industrial to commercial. The Baumgarten family, which owns the neighboring Schulenburg RV Park, opposes the company’s plans to build a parking lot for 18-wheelers along the north side of their property.
$7.3 Million in Drugs Seized Here

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Tuesday, March 2, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Dodge truck on IH-10 at the 671 milemarker at approximately 11:54 am for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver, Thumann became suspicious that the vehicle was involved in smuggling illegal narcotics. Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle. Thumann deployed his canine Kolt to conduct an exterior sweep of the vehicle. Thumann observed Kolt alerted to the tailgate of the truck for the odor of illegal narcotics. Thumann accessed the compartment in the tailgate and removed approximately 50 pounds of meth and 22 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $7.3 million. The driver Luis Fonseca, 21, and passenger Armando Morales, 28, both from Eagle Pass were arrested for Felony drug possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center. Assisting with the stop was Deputy Ellison.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Opens in Downtown LG

Alex Henley, owner and head instructor at La Grange Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, opened his new gym in La Grange on Saturday, Feb. 27. The gym is located across from the courthouse at 240 W. Colorado Street (the old Hallmark Store). The gym offers one free week of instruction to anyone who wants to try it out. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a style of martial arts that emphasizes submissions and ground fighting. Henley said his gym teaches both the self defense and competitive sport aspects of the fighting style. Senior Connections Celebrate December Birthdays

Seniors have had some wonderful days at Senior Connections this grand month of December 2023. The week started off with some musical notes that soothed our souls as we listened to the music of Dave Hollas. He goes by the nickname, “Super Dave,” which was given to him while he was in college. Dave Hollas was “super” to us, that is for sure.
