More Vaccines Rolling Out Locally

100 Teachers Vaccinated Friday; Tejas Running Drive-Thru

Coronavirus vaccines are slowing making their way into Fayette County. Most residents have had to travel to the distribution hub in Brenham for a shot. But last week, about 200 firstdose shots were administered locally through two separate efforts.

Tejas Health Care risk manager Mary Fisher said her organization received about 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine through the Texas Department of State Health Services. Those doses were earmarked for patients over 65 and those with chronic health conditions that make them more at-risk for the virus. Tejas contacted patients that qualified and began registering them last week. They set up a drive-through vaccination drive at their administration offices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week.

In addition, the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management procured about 100 doses that were earmarked for teachers around the county. Last Friday the County partnered with St. Mark’s Medical Center to administer the shots at Flatonia I.S.D., Schulenburg I.S.D., La Grange I.S.D. and Sacred Heart. Vaccinations of LGISD teachers occurred Friday at the school performing arts center.

Craig Moreau, Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator, said the County targeted teachers who are over age 65 and those with pre-existing medical conditions, along with teachers who serve students that are especially at-risk for the virus.

“Our eventual goal is to get vaccines to every doctor’s office and pharmacy, so they can provide vaccines to their patients, instead of everyone having to travel to Brenham to the hub,” Moreau said.
