Fire Fighters to the Rescue When Garden Hoses Fail

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department put out a big pile of debris that caught fire on Von Minden Road Thursday afternoon, March 4.

The call came in around 2 p.m. reporting a fire that was possibly threatening a structure. Residents at the property were attempting to fight the fire with garden hoses. There were several nearby structures. The fire got especially close to a backhoe that the residents could not get started. The residents tried pulling it away from the fire with another backhoe, but the heavy machine would not budge.

Menefee said firefighter Jason Von Minden operated the functioning backhoe and spread apart the pile of debris.

“Then we were able to apply some Class A foam to put it out,” Menefee said.

Fire Chief Frank Menefee said the pile of debris was the remnants of an old house that had been demolished.

Menefee said he told the residents they needed to rent some roll-off containers and haul away the debris instead of setting it on fire.
