Last Friday La Grange High School hosted their district oneact play competition. La Grange’s play, Alfred Uhry’s “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” was one of three plays selected to advance to Bi-District that will be held here in La Grange on March 21-22.

Two Welders Fight Fire With Buckets Until Help Arrives

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department battled a grass fire on Knape Rd. Thursday, March 3. The fire department got the call around 2:30 p.m. Two metal workers were welding a pipe fence on the property (pictured above) when the fire started. One of the workers told the Record that he was welding some pipe with a protective hood over his head when he felt his leg get hot. The welder said he removed the hood and discovered that sparks had ignited the surrounding dry grass. The two welders fought the fire with buckets of water. La Grange Fire Chief Frank Menefee was the first firefighter to show up. He battled the blaze with a rake (left) until fire trucks arrived and quickly extinguished the flames (below). Fayette County Brisket Picked 3rd Out of 242 Teams in Houston

La Grange barbecue master Curt Harbers won third place in brisket at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Barbecue Cookoff, which took place Feb. 24-26 at the NRG Center in Houston.

Vacant Bealls in La Grange Will Become Regional Training Center

The old Bealls building at 215 Ellinger Rd, which has been vacant for two years has been sold and will become a training center for Education Service Center Region 13, which serves as a liaison between the Texas Education Agency and the local school districts. Region 13 encompasses 57 school districts, 24 charter schools, eight institutions of higher education, and 17 private schools. “We are excited to expand out to LG with a distance campus to offer educator training, student course offerings and even rentable space for the community,” said Rich Elsasser, Executive Director of Region 13. The race for the Republican nomination for Fayette County Judge is headed to a runoff between Dan Mueller and Craig Moreau. The runoff will take place on May 24.
Cannon Fire for Texas Independence Day

Flatonia Advances to Regional Quarterfinals

The Flatonia boys basketball team marched into the third round of the playoffs in dominating fashion by slamming West Hardin 90-46 Thursday in Houston. West Hardin had come into this 2A Area round matchup with a stellar 24-5 record but they were no match for the Bulldogs, who improved to 34-4 with the win.
La Grange Soccer Keeps Rolling

The La Grange soccer teams got a pair of district wins Friday. The Leopard boys defeated Rockdale at home, 2-0 on goals from Jesus Soto and Phillip Arceneaux and the defense shut out its sixth consecutive opponent.

Mayor Picks ‘Pride of LG’ Quilts

Before last week’s Best Little Quilt Show in Texas packed visitors from all over the state into the KC Hall, La Grange mayor Jan Dockery faced the challenge of picking two of the 209 exhibited quilts as her “Pride of La Grange” honorees. The winner of her artisan award went this one (right) called “The Quilt from Hell!” so named because of the difficulty of making it. CAMERON – Dana Baker said the tears were already forming in his eyes as La Grange’s only senior boys basketball player faced the prospect that his career was ticking down to its final seconds. But the only tears Baker shed Tuesday were ones of joy as he capped a magical playoff comeback by the Leps that sends La Grange to the second round.
Flatonia Boys Knock Out Holland

The Flatonia boys basketball team had no trouble in its first round playoff game knocking off Holland 79-59 Monday in Caldwell. Keyshaun Green led the Bulldogs in scoring with 20 points, Duke Sodek had 13, Luke Law 11 and Alex Hernandez 10.
Lady Lions Head to the Sweet 16

There are 16 Class 1A girls basketball teams left in the playoffs, and the Fayetteville Lady Lions are one of them. The Fayetteville girls won in the regional quarterfinals 63-50 Tuesday over Nueces Canyon (the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year).
Quilts Ready to Blanket La Grange

After a year off last year because of COVID precautions, The Best Little Quilt Show in Texas returns to La Grange this weekend at the KC Hall. Above, Barbara Schellberg and Sandy Courrier prepare to hang one of the 209 quilts (more than normal) that will be on display at the show. Courrier is the chairwoman of this year’s show. To the right, more volunteers getting quilts ready for display. The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.
First Annual Bluff SchuetzenFest Planned

For a half century between the 1870s and 1920s the Bluff Schuetzenverein invited people from across Texas to gather on the Bluff overlooking La Grange. They participated in marksmanship competitions, celebrated the holidays, enjoyed picnics, played games for young and old, and danced to German folk music. The Bluff became a favorite gathering place among German-Texans. In many ways, the Schuetzenverein provided the glue that held the community together. The Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites and the Texas Historical Commission are excited to bring back many of the Schuetzenverein’s traditions and celebrations with the first annual Bluff SchuetzenFest on Saturday, May 14.

A historic rivalry was tom apart Thursday as the University Interscholastic League ( UIL) announced its sports realignments for the next two seasons. La Grange and Smithville, which have been district rivals for about a long as anyone can remember (The Leps and Tigers have played each other evety season since 1972 except for 1996 and 97) were placed in different football districts.

Leps Win District Basketball Title - Again

With the song “We are the champions” blaring over the loudspeakers, the members of the La Grange boys basketball team each took a turn climbing up a ladder and cutting down a piece of the net at Lep Gym Friday after their 46-25 win over Giddings.

The La Grange girls basketball team only has two seniors, but both played big roles late as the Lady Leps rallied for a come-from-behind 4236 victory over Giddings Friday. Xeriah Jimenez provided some late scoring spark and Tori Harold was dominant on the boards as both seniors were playing in their final game at Lep Gym.
