Lady Lions Head to the Sweet 16

There are 16 Class 1A girls basketball teams left in the playoffs, and the Fayetteville Lady Lions are one of them. The Fayetteville girls won in the regional quarterfinals 63-50 Tuesday over Nueces Canyon (the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year).

“They had a majority of their team back from last year, but we watched film and put together a pretty good game plan,” said Fayetteville head coach Marcus Sodek.

But things started off shaky Tuesday as Nueces Canyon bolted out to a 16-2 lead.

“Honestly we were shellshocked, but we chipped away and got it down to nine at the half,” Sodek said. “We just needed to calm down.”

The Lady Lions racheted up the defensive pressure in the second half and turned a lot of steals into quick points.

The Lady Lions (27-7) now advance to face Zavalla (26-9) in the regional semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday at Del Valle High School.

If they win that they turn around and play again Saturday back at Del Valle for the Region IV title, and a berth at state.
