Schmidt Celebrates 40 Years at LGISD; 35 With Leps Baseball

As the La Grange baseball team gets ready for the playoffs next week, few teams can rival the experience the Leps have in their dugout. La Grange assistant baseball/ pitching coach Wayne Schmidt is celebrating his 40th year as a coach at La Grange ISD, and his 35th with the Leps baseball program.

TxDot Expansion Uncovers a Surprise

Contractors working for Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) uncovered a piece of La Grange history while working on improvements to the intersection at US 77 and SH 71 Business. The contractors were drilling a hole for a new traffic light pole in the parking lot at Pharmhouse Drug when they struck some old underground fuel tanks. That corner of the intersection used to be the location of Erwin Petzold’s Gulf Station, which opened in 1924. The tanks were full of water when the contractors uncovered them. The contractors excavated the tanks and pumped them out on Tuesday.
Shakespeare’s 460th Birthday

William Shakespeare would have turned 460 on Tuesday. To honor the occasion, La Grange 6th grade English teacher Emily Ayres took her students outside for a celebration of “Sonnets and Scenes.” Ayres talked with the students about the play “The Taming of the Shrew” and had students do cold readings of an Act Two scene between sisters Bianca and Katherine. Emily Ayres, seated left, is in her first year at LGISD. She is the daughter of Shakespeare at Winedale founder James “Doc” Ayres.

Seniors Power Lady Leps to 15-0 Win in Regular Season Finale

In their final regular season home game, La Grange’s senior softball players put on a show as they smashed Giddings 15-0 Tuesday. La Grange senior Marissa Gonzales drove in Kylin Brawley to put the Lady Leps up by 15 in the bottom of the fourth inning to enact the mercy rule and end the game early.
Book Scrutiny Still an Issue for LGISD

Once again the La Grange School Board meeting began with commentary on the concern for book purchases, only this time the majority of the speakers were commenting on the need to allow the librarians to do their job and choose books that are appropriate for the age and reading level of the students.
Wheelchair Donation From an Old Friend

Many locals may remember Pastor Bill Hassel who served Saint Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange from 1985 to 1998. He endeared himself to many during this time, but then along with wife Renee moved on to serve First English Lutheran Church in Victoria. Pastor Bill was stricken with ALS a few years later and continues to fight the disease as well as serving others wherever and whenever he can. He remains a dear friend to many here in La Grange, and he is still in the email group for the Saint Paul Fishers of Men (the church men’s group), which he helped to form. As such, he still receives every message sent out to the group. When Norma Adams, a Saint Paul church member needed help finding someone to build a wheelchair ramp and to find a powered wheelchair for her injured and disabled son Vince, the request was sent out to Fishers of Men. Pastor Bill saw this message and his immediate response was “I can’t help with a ramp. However, I can with a wheelchair!” He had an extra chair that he no longer uses and graciously donated it to someone who really needed it. He and Renee even delivered the chair to La Grange.

Commercial activity in Schulenburg picked up recently with four new businesses opening or soon to open. Workers have been busy renovating the old Diamond S Restaurant at 22 N.
LG’s Busiest Intersection to See Expansion in the Coming Weeks

Contractors with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently cut down the large tree in front of Fayette Savings Bank in La Grange, at the corner of Travis St. and Jefferson St.
Fish Pond at City Hall Could Return

City of La Grange workers recently uncovered the old goldfish pond in the plaza at City Hall. The long-forgotten water feature was filled with dirt and capped with a concrete lid several decades ago.
Downtown Warrenton Scorched by Fire

A fire in downtown Warrenton Thursday morning destroyed two structures and also damaged the Warrenton fire station. When firefighters arrived shortly after 5 a.m., they were able to safely get a pair of fire trucks out of the station to fight the blaze, which started just feet away and had spread to the attic of the fire station.
