At Least Four New Businesses Coming to Schulenburg

Commercial activity in Schulenburg picked up recently with four new businesses opening or soon to open.

Workers have been busy renovating the old Diamond S Restaurant at 22 N. Kessler (US 77). The building is owned by the same company that owns the Hitching Post convenience store next door. A manager at the Hitching Post said the building will be a barbecue restaurant. She said construction would take about eight months.

Tulum Cafe at the corner of US 77 and US 90 has closed. This week a new restaurant opened at that location, El Vaquero #2. It is operated by the same group that runs El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant in Hallettsville.

Kacie Gallegos is opening a boutique called Piper Jo & Co. at 108 Kessler Ave., next to the Original Kountry Bakery. The company has been operating for the last two years online and at popups during events such as the Antiques Fair in Warrenton.

“I focus on home decor and gifts,” Gallegos said. “I’m going to have men’s and women’s apparel, along with baby and kids – a little bit of everything.”

She plans to hold a grand opening on May 18. Gallegos said tentative hours for the store will be Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Bartos family recently renovated the former Baumgarten-Matula Hardware Store at 641 N. Main St. and opened a new business called Country Oak Boutique. The store held a soft-opening this past weekend. An official grand opening is scheduled for May 18.

“The vision for the top floor will be a small event venue,” said Megan Bartos. “We plan to get the bottom up and running permanently before tackling the rest of the upstairs.”
