Texas Ramp Project Celebrates Milestone

The Texas Ramp Project (TRP) celebrated building “100 Miles of Freedom” on Nov. 15. The statewide organization estimates that since TRP’s inception in 2006, its more than 3,500 volunteers have built 100 miles of ramps for people who use wheelchairs and walkers.
VFW Post Celebrates 75th Anniversary

On November 17, 2020, District Commander Dave Walden presented a certificate to Fayette Memorial VFW Post 5254 congratulating the post upon the occasion of its 75th anniversary. With Boatramp Closed, Northside Park Is Now the Place to Go for River Access

The Colorado River boat ramp in La Grange will be closed for the next 18 months, but folks who like to kayak and canoe can now access the river at Northside Park. Workers from the City of La Grange carved a canoe and kayak launch into the river bank last week.

Second Grade at La Grange Elementary recently held a school-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive. All donations went to the local A.M.E.N.
Pandemic Takes Toll On Area’s Sales Tax

La Grange will struggle to reach $2 million in sales tax for 2020, another grim indicator of the pandemic’s powerful punch. City sales tax revenue hasn’t been below $2 million since 2017, but November’s rebate from the state was down again from last year.
COVID Cases Up in Fayette, But Not at July and August Highs

The recent uptick in coronavirus cases in Fayette County has quite a way to go before surpassing the numbers seen locally in July and early August. Estimates compiled by the Texas Department of State Health Services shows the greatest number of active cases came on Aug.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, La Grange Volunteer Fire Department took delivery of their newest fire truck, Engine 1.
County Offering In-Home Testing

Fayette County officials began offering free in-home coronavirus testing on November 16. Funding provided by a private grant will allow residents to be tested for COVID-19 without having to leave their homes.
Ellinger Leaders Begin Forming New City Government

Ellinger residents voted to incorporate their small town in the Nov. 3 election by a vote of 76-44. The community will be incorporated as a Class C municipality under Texas law, governed by a mayor and two city commissioners.
Ahlschlager Sworn In

Clarence Ahlschlager Jr. officially joined the Schulenburg City Council at their meeting Monday night, Nov. 16. He replaces Place 4 Councilman Geoffrey Schiftli, who lost reelection by a vote of 528-337.

Caboose Makes One Last Trip

Charlie Brewer of La Grange purchased the old railroad caboose that used to sit outside Moravia Store south of Schulenburg. There aren’t any tracks between Moravia and La Grange, so she hired Ray’s Crane Service to move the 60,000 lb. behemoth.

Local Leaders React as Biden Projected Presidential Winner, Trump Vows Fight

Over the weekend Joe Biden was projected as the winner of the 2020 presidential election. As of Monday morning, the Associated Press said Biden had garnered 290 electoral votes compared to 214 to Donald Trump, and he also had 50,7-percent of the national vote compared to 47.7-percent for Trump, though Trump has continued legal proceedings questioning the outcome of the election.
Theatre Returns to LG In Form of ‘Blithe Spirit’

The folks at Fayette County Community Theatre are at it again. After having to cancel half of their 2020 season due to the pandemic, they have reconvened to produce “Blithe Spirit,” a comedy by Noel Coward.

Fair President Gives Update on the German-Czech Mart Plan

Back in January, the Fayette County Commissioners Court awarded $375,000 in American Rescue Plan (ARP) money to the Fayette County Fair Association to replace the old German-Czech Mart at the Fairgrounds.

Traffic Stop Leads to Felony Money Laundering Charges

Massive Mural to be a Tribute to La Grange History

Along one of the busiest streets in town, a massive mural honoring the history of La Grange is being painted by a famous artist. Tyler Kay Reichart, of Cat Springs, who now lives in the Woodlands, (she goes by the name Tyler Kay) has done hundreds of murals, including recent ones at Houston Intercontinental Airport and in downtown Columbus, started the project earlier this month.
