Preschoolers Meet Community Helpers

St. James Episcopal Preschool hosted a Truck Touch Wednesday as an introduction to their “Community Helpers” unit. Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, EMS, La Grange Police and Fire Department let students touch, see, and hear what their trucks and equipment do and how they keep us safe. The event was held at First Presbyterian Church, which is where the preschool is operating while construction is being completed at St. James for a new education building with more classroom space. Ten New Homes are Up in Schulenburg Subdivision With 25 More by Year’s End

DSW Homes has completed ten new homes in its Falcon View subdivision in Schulenburg and plans to complete the remaining 25 by the end of the year, according to DSW executive Beau Yarbrough. “We should be out of there by the end of the year,” Yarbrough said.

Sales Tax Revenue Slumps in October

Maybe 2020 looks so bad because 2019 was actually so good, at least for local sales tax revenue. The pandemic slump was particularly evident in this month’s sales tax rebates for the towns in Fayette County.
Big Turnout for Early Voting

Tuesday was the first day of in-person early voting in Texas and locals have sure been turning out, with 1,932 in Fayette County voting just in the first two days. Fayette County 4-H Color Run Held

Fayette County 4-H recently sponsored a 4K Color Run/Walk on Saturday, October 10 in conjunction with National 4-H Week One Day Community Service Project. One Day is a day when all 4-H Clubs/Members in Texas do something to benefit their community. The Color Run raised over $2,500 and was donated to the Emily Fritsch 4-H Scholarship Fund. Sponsors of the run included: La Grange 4-H, Buck Up Auctions and Realty, MidTex Materials LLC, and Orsak’s Café, Capital Farm Credit, Flatonia 4-H, J&J AC and Heating Service LLC, and Round Top Carmine 4-H, Fayetteville 4-H, Grow Wings 4-H, Fayette 4-H Horse Club, Pure Country 4-H, and Schulenburg 4-H and Fayette County Fairgrounds.

Local Co-Ops Sponsor Shred Day

National Cooperative Month provides an opportunity for cooperatives to celebrate the benefits of cooperatives with their members and the community. As a special thank you and to celebrate Co-op Month, Colorado Valley Telephone Cooperative and Fayette Electric Cooperative hosted their 3rd Annual Shred Day on Friday, October 2 for their members. PROSHRED, a document shredding firm, provided the on-site shredding truck to shred documents for FEC members in the morning and for CVTC customers in the afternoon. FEC’s Justin Neiser and Aaron Tonn place documents, delivered by FEC members, in the container for PROSHRED’s Alejandro Marin to place in the shredding truck.

FEC, Out of Room, Considering Move

The La Grange City Council granted a request from Fayette Electric Cooperative to rezone two lots on North Von Minden Road from residential to commercial. The two properties lie next to FEC’s pole yard. FEC General Manager Gary Don Nietsche told the Record Monday that the Coop may eventually move its offices from downtown La Grange to the Von Minden Road property.
Second Chance Donates $10,000 To Local Fire Departments

Second Chance Emporium recently donated $1,000 to each of the ten volunteer fire departments in Fayette County. Since most of the departments were unable to hold their usual fundraisers this year, support from the community is needed more than ever. Painting Donated to Fayette Heritage Museum

The Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives recently received a donation of an oil painting by the noted early Texas artist, Hugo David Pohl. Pohl was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1878 and studied art there, as well as in New York and at the Académie Julien in Paris.

USDA Has Changed What Planting Zone We’re In
