LGISD to Delay Start of School by One Week
La Grange ISD has announced that the start of classes in the District will begin on Thursday, August 20, 2020 instead of the original start date of Thursday, August 13. The reason for the change is that the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management is making COVID-19 testing available for all La Grange ISD faculty and staff who wish to be tested. The testing date will be Monday, August 17, and will give staff the opportunity to test and begin the school year with the knowledge that they are free of COVID symptoms prior to the start of school.
LGISD School Board Hears Reports, Hires Four Teachers
In Friday’s edition we covered topics from last week’s LGISD school board meeting related to the return to school, but the board discussed a lot more than that. Here are some more highlights: Optimist Club Misty Touchet with the La Grange Optimist Club addressed the board concerning the fees that the Optimist Club pays the district for use of the facilities for the various activities that the Optimist Club sponsors.
Even a Pandemic Doesn’t Stop the Music at Festival Hill
The lilting calls of cave swallows in residence in the eaves of the Concert Hall roof are the only music that is heard most days at Festival Hill. Usually this time of year there are over one hundred young musicians, conductors and faculty members on campus. The grounds bustling with students heading to meals, practicing under oak trees and hurrying to Concert Hall rehearsals. The postponed Festival and performances have left a quiet spot on the Hill .... but wait, is that James Dick at the piano?
Free Entry for Event at La Grange’s Texas Quilt Museum This Saturday
The Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange has reopened and you have a chance to see their held-over exhibits (and learn a lot about one of them) for free Saturday. The museum will present a Gallery Talk of “Texas Grand Masters: Timeless Quilts” with co-curators Vicki Mangum and Marcia Kaylakie on Saturday, July 25, at 3 p.m.
Drilling to Begin September for New Ellinger Well
The Ellinger Sewer and Water Supply Corporation held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, July 13, at the Ellinger Fire Station. Greg Hunger, president, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. with six board members in attendance. The Board reviewed and approved the minutes from the June meeting.
Fayetteville Welcomes New Antiques Store to the Square
A new store at 124 North Live Oak on the town’s east side of the square will be having its grand opening on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store, Vintage Rose Market, will offer antiques, home goods, vintage clothing and linens. A beer and wine bar will open soon in the same location.
Fayette County Deputies, Dispatchers And Firefighters Had A Busy Weekend
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that deputies, dispatchers and firefighters were busy over the weekend. On Friday afternoon, July 17 around 3:41 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a vehicle and grass fire on US Highway 290 near Hills Road. The Carmine, Ledbetter and Burton Fire Departments were notified and responded to the scene. Upon arrival the vehicle was fully engulfed and a grass fire had started along the roadway. Deputies Joe Gonzales and Arvin Gresham responded and assisted with traffic control. The fire was quickly extinguished and was determined to have started from the engine area according to the driver.
