Schulenburg Endorses Hwy. 77 Overpass Option

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to replace the battered old US 77 underpass in Schulenburg. Oversized loads often strike the old bridge that carries the railroad tracks over the current highway underpass. After one such incident back in April, Tx-DOT told the Record they were looking at options to improve the clearance issues with the old underpass, which was built in 1935. At a Schulenburg City Council meeting two weeks ago, TxDOT presented the City with two options – a deeper underpass or a new overpass. TxDOT asked for the Council’s preference. At the following meeting this Monday, Oct. 17, the Council voted to endorse the overpass option by a vote of 4-0. Councilman Greg Thomas was absent.

No Charges After Suspects Flee, are Caught

A police search for a pair of suspected burglars in La Grange Monday afternoon ended with no arrests after the property owners declined to press charges. The incident unfolded on the south side of town around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 17. La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath said an officer noticed a male and female coming out of a backyard during routine patrol. He said the pair took off running after seeing the officer. The officer called for backup and a search ensued. Several other La Grange officers, deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety joined in the search. Officers searched the area near the US 77 river bridge on the south side of town. The search continued into the neighborhood near the Faison House and Las Fuentes Restaurant.
RT-C Girls and Fayetteville Boys Win District Cross Country Titles

The Fayetteville boys and the Round Top-Carmine girls won team titles at the District 29-1A cross country meet last week and now advance to regionals. Lady Leopards Clinch Volleyball Playoff Berth

Schulenburg, Fayetteville & RT-C Also Win La Grange volleyball team swept Caldwell Friday 25-10, 25-23, 25-23 to improve to 2318 overall and 8-1 in district and mathematically clinched a playoff berth – though with the strong way the Lady Leps are playing that has seemed clear for a while now. Maddi Fritz led the Lady Leps in kills with 13 Friday and Camille Gonzalez added 11.
Leps Dominate Caldwell to Even District Record at 1-1

Five different Leps scored touchdowns Friday as La Grange pounded visiting Caldwell Friday 44-10. Caldwell came into this game looking for its first win of the season, but the Leps were in no mood to be kind after losing to Smithville in a heartbreaker the week before.

Round Top-Carmine Knocks Off Fayetteville; LG Rolls

The Round Top-Carmine volleyball team pulled off a shocker Tuesday, beating No. 1-ranked Fayetteville in five sets in a district match. RT-C won the first set 2624, lost the second set 27-25, won the third 25-20, lost the fourth 25-17 before prevailing in the fifth set 16-14. The Cubettes improved to 16-13 overall with the win and 4-1 in district. Fayetteville dropped to 34-4 overall and 4-1 in district. Fayetteville’s Brooklyn Jaeger had 50 kills and Kayme Schley had nine. Peyton Jurecka had three blocks. Jaeger had 34 digs, Kynley Hurst had 30 and Marissa Rohde had 15. Hurst had 53 assists. Round Top-Carmine’s individual stats were not available at press time.

Clean-Up from Downtown Fire Progresses Quickly in Flatonia as Czhilispiel Nears

Crews of volunteer organizations, working with city and county officials, have begun removing debris that resulted from the fire in downtown Flatonia on October 3. The Flatonia Fire Department with the assistance of mutual aid companies was able to contain and extinguish the fire, preventing the flames from traveling to neighboring buildings. The fire caused a total property loss - nothing is salvageable. What remains is a very dangerous, structurally unsound building, and is a safety hazard.
La Grange Band Keeps Surging

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Mighty Leopard Band (MLB) competed in the Edna Marching Invitational at Edna High School. There were 33 bands in attendance, including 11 Class 4A Bands. Bands were given ratings, as well as rankings, and had the opportunity to compete for additional awards. The MLB was awarded a unanimous Superior Rating (Division 1) by the judging panel an improvement from the 1/2/1 split panel at the Troy Marching Festival.
Details Announced for $1.2 Million Park at Hope Hill

The La Grange City Council heard an update Tuesday night on the Hope Hill Park Project. The City plans to pay for the park improvements with a 50-50 matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

Fayette County Visited by Texas ‘T’ Party

Ninety-five splendid Ford Model T cars attended the 45th Texas “T” Party touring event in Hallettsville for five days last week. Their daily tours included visits to J&J Saddlery in Cuero, the DeWitt County Courthouse, the Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner, Yoakum, the Mengele Hatchery in Hallettsville and an airport fly-in with 70 planes. The Austin-based Club makes several multi-day tours in central Texas each year, and they have visited Fayette County before. On Friday they came to La Grange and Plum. This year’s visit to Fayette County began with a fuel stop in La Grange followed by a drive out to Plum. A delicious barbeque lunch was served in their parish hall by members of St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church. The sight of their parking lot overflowing with beautiful antique cars mostly over 90 years old was matched by the pleasure of hearing all those smooth running motors pulling out for the next stop. It was less than a mile into down town Plum, where the cars all lined up in front of the buildings housing the collection of antique and vintage cars – mostly beautifully restored – of Annette and Michael Bandy. Annette served the visitors with a number of delicious desserts.

Downtown Planter Boxes May Become Art Installation Instead

The new planter boxes along the courthouse square in La Grange may become a public art installation. At the La Grange City Council meeting on Monday night, March 11, Councilman Ken Taylor asked for an update on the planter boxes.

Turtle Wing Baseball, Softball Games Coming In March through April

Turtle Wing celebratesAutism Acceptance month in a variety of ways, and one is by partnering with the schools in our service areas high school baseball and softball teams to host Turtle Wing Games. Over 15 games are scheduled from the end of March and through April, and children enrolled in Special Education at the schools get to be the star of the show and throw out the first pitch.

Residents Briefly Evacuated in Warda Area

Residents in the Warda area of Fayette County were briefly asked to evacuate their residences Monday evening, March 4. According to Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller a natural gas leak occurred around 7 p.m.
