Family of Six Escapes Through a Window Amidst Early Morning Fire

A home near West Point burned to the ground early Thursday morning, Oct. 8.

According to La Grange Fire Chief Frank Menefee, the six people living at the home escaped with just the clothes on their backs. The family lost nearly all of their belongings, along with two vehicles that also caught fire.

“The fire had been burning for a while and got a pretty good run on us before we were notified,” Menefee said.

The home was located on Old Lockhart Road near the intersection of Makinson Road.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported that the call came in around 3:47 a.m. La Grange Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Sheriff’s deputies Michael Otten and Ryan Meagher and an ambulance crew from Fayette County EMS. Upon arrival, Otten observed the house fully engulfed and the occupants of the house standing in the driveway.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, the occupants reported that they woke up and found the house on fire around them. They escaped through a window. EMS treated some of the residents for scrapes and bruises that they suffered while trying to escape.

Menefee called for assistance from Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department. Thirteen firefighters from the two departments fought the blaze until around 8 a.m. The home was completely destroyed, as were two vehicles that were parked at the residence.

“They lost everything,” Menefee said.

Menefee said the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management was arranging assistance for the family with the American Red Cross.
