September 3-7, 1971 Mrs. Mathilda Zbranek grew the La Grange area’s first bale of cotton for the 1971 season. Weighing in at 655 pounds on the scale at the Kasper-Michalk Gin, it sold to Ehlers Cotton Company for a premium price of 30¢ a pound. Mrs. Zbranek had been raising cotton for 53 years, and the Ehlers firm was observing its 50th anniversary in the cotton buying business.

Swing And Blast Classic to Benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley

The Big Easy Ranch is the host for the annual Swing & Blast Classic to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley on Monday, Oct. 18. This event provides opportunities for sporting clay shoot competitions or 18 holes of golf. It will feature a champagne diamond toast with the prize of a 1½ carat diamond, an exciting helicopter ball drop, an elegant dinner and a lively silent and live auctions.

AMEN Serves 197 Families In August

A total of 197 families were served for the month of August with a total of 482 individuals served by the AMEN Food Pantry. A total of 151 volunteers served for 370 hours to the pantry. A total of 1,212 pounds of food were donated.

Traffic Violation Leads To Arrest

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on Friday morning, Sept. 3, around 1 a.m. Deputy Jared Michalec conducted a traffic stop on State Hwy. 71 westbound near West Point on a 2021 Ford Explorer for a traffic violation. Upon contact with the driver the odor of marijuana was emitting from the vehicle occupied by four subjects.

Schreiner University Announces Presidents List And Deans List

Schreiner University has named qualified students to its President’s and Dean’s List. To be eligible for the President’s List, full-time students must earn at least a 4.0 grade point average for the term, passing all classes, and have at least 12 hours credit for the term.
