Winchester to Hold Community-Wide Garage Sale

There will be a Community Wide Garage Sale in Winchester on Saturday, Oct. 2. If you are interested in participating, please contact Bobbie Hajek at (979) 639-1646 or email her at bbhajek8255@gmail.com. There will be a small charge to help cover the advertising expense.

4-H Spaghetti Dinner

The Spaghetti Dinner prepared by the Winchester Area Civic Association (WACA) to benefit the Winchester 4-H Club will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Zilss Hall. The dinner will begin at 11 a.m. and will be drive thru or eat in. Winchester BBQ Cook Off

The 9th Annual BBQ Showdown will be held at Shorty’s Bar in Winchester on Sept. 24-25. It will benefit Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area and the Family Crisis Center. Meat categories will be chicken, pork spareribs (no baby backs), and beef brisket. Jackpot categories will be the open (provided by event coordinators), beans, and bloody marys. The entry fees will be $150 for meats and $20 for each jackpot. There will be cash payments paid out in all events and trophies for meat category winners and overall champion. Barn Board Quilt Trail

Drive out to Winchester. pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area. The trail is self-drive, available at your convenience, and is a great way to spend a hot afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.

Recycling Trailer

The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow.

Zilss Community Hall

Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.

The Little Free Library

The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like advertised, please post.

Condolences

Deepest sympathy to Brittni Adams and her family on the death of her grandmother, Su Field, 81 years old of La Grange. Ms. Field died on Aug. 27 and is survived by four children, 7 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 2 special nieces and many other nieces and nephews.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Jason Dunk, 47, who passed away on Aug. 27 in Winchester. Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Rene Dunk. He is survived by his uncle Lee W. Perkins and numerous cousins. Jason will be missed by many friends.

First United Methodist Church

The Winchester First United Methodist Church has returned to service inside the sanctuary. Please wear a mask and social distance inside the church. The church has services on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev. Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.

Shiloh Baptist Church

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church

The weekly worship service takes place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Following the worship service, you may gather in the Education Building for Bible Study and Sunday School beginning at 10:15 a.m. You are welcome to visit for Worship and Bible Study. When you come to the church, please introduce yourself to Pastor Nate, he will be thrilled to get to meet you.
