Tropical storm Nicholas appeared headed for the Texas coast as of press time and was expected to bring rain to Fayette County Monday through Wednesday. The Houston area and coastal parts of farther east Texas could receive as much as 20 inches of rain, but as of Sunday rain totals here were predicted to be under two inches – of course a change in the storm’s path could alter those predictions significantly..

On Saturday, Sept. 18, Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host its annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. As part of state-wide Texas Heroes Day commemorations, this ceremony honors the Republic of Texas soldiers killed in the Dawson and Mier Expeditions who are entombed on Monument Hill. This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from Fayette County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, the Honorable Judge Kyle Hartmann, as well as the traditional wreath-laying ceremony and gun salute led by costumed re-enactors. Seating for the ceremony may be limited. Personal lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. Admission fees are waived for ceremony attendees.

Hostyn KJT Society No. 3 officers presented checks to the Hostyn Youth. These checks were given to the youth for their efforts in helping the society sell tickets for the Hostyn KJT annual drive thru fundraiser and the bake sale held on the youth’s behalf. Additionally, a check representing matching funds in the amount of $400 from the KJT Home Office was presented. Has anyone ever wondered about the palm trees, many of which are over 125 years old, that are seen around old homesteads in the central and southern parts of our county? In spite of multiple onslaughts by hurricane and tornadic winds throughout the years, these old sentinels still stand tall. However, many of these palms finally succumbed in the February 2021 “super freeze”, not being able to withstand the extreme Artic blast that relentlessly attacked them to their very cores for days on end. They now stand with frayed, brown foliage limply hanging off the tops of their dead trunks, a sad reminder of their passing. Others have been cut down by homeowners, who either feared property damage from a potential fall-over or because of their unsightly appearance.

Volunteers for Shared Lutheran Ministry (SLM) masked up and velcroed safety vests to graciously distribute over 9,000 lbs. of prepackaged boxes at Waldeck Lutheran Church to 117 families. Pastor Marcia Kifer, who is retiring, distributed food in sweltering 90+ degree heat for the last time.

The Fayette County Community Theatre will be holding auditions for their final production of the 2021 season, John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.” Auditions will be held Sept. 20 and 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater on the grounds of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. This casting call is open to the public, with no experience or preparation necessary to audition. Those unable to make the listed audition dates must contact FCCT to schedule an alternative date no later than Sept. 15.

A family dispute ended in an assault charge at the La Grange football game last Friday. According to a report from La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath, the episode happened on Sept.

The Fayette County Fair Association recognized Gary and Gale Lincke for donating display shelving and other items to the Fair’s creative arts exhibit hall. The items came from the Linckes’ old Hallmark Store on the Square in La Grange, which closed last year.
