Monument Hill’s Texas Heroes Day Events are This Saturday

On Saturday, Sept. 18, Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host its annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. As part of state-wide Texas Heroes Day commemorations, this ceremony honors the Republic of Texas soldiers killed in the Dawson and Mier Expeditions who are entombed on Monument Hill. This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from Fayette County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, the Honorable Judge Kyle Hartmann, as well as the traditional wreath-laying ceremony and gun salute led by costumed re-enactors. Seating for the ceremony may be limited. Personal lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. Admission fees are waived for ceremony attendees.

The remembrance ceremony will be streamed on Facebook for those unable to attend in person. After the ceremony, sites staff and volunteers will provide living history demonstrations, interpretive programs, and opportunities to explore the grounds of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites.

“Commemorations on September 18 allow for the community and visitors to connect with descendants of Mier and Dawson Expedition members,” says Sites Manager Marsha Hendrix. “Together, we reflect on the history and legacy on Monument Hill and the Republic of Texas Era.”

This year’s commemorations are made possible with the support of the Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites, the Texas Historical Commission, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas-Monument Hill Chapter, and the Sons of the Republic of Texas-Monument Hill Chapter.
