LGISD Board Adopts Resolution Against Vouchers

La Grange School board members voted Monday to approve a resolution calling on the Texas Legislature to reject any diversion of public dollars from public school to private entities in the form of education savings accounts and similar voucher plans. Trustee Calvin Mersiovsky left before the vote was taken. There was no opposition.

The Hostyn/Plum annual scholarship fish fry and bake sale will be held Friday, March 31 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the La Grange KC Community Center. Drivethru only meal will consist of fried fish, buttered potatoes, pinto beans, and cole slaw. Plates are $14. All funds from the bake sale and fish fry benefit the Hostyn/Plum Scholarship Fund. Ths is the last Lenten fish fry.

School Voucher Fight Hits Home

Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke to a large crowd in Giddings Tuesday about his push for parental choice in education. Abbott wants the Texas Legislature to approve a package of bills that would provide parents in Texas who opt-out of public schools with an Education Savings Account.

Subject Arrested for Possession, Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on Tuesday, March 21, around 1:20 a.m. Deputy Austin Moore was traveling eastbound on St. Hwy. 71 near Plum when he observed a white Toyota Camry traveling westbound at a high rate of speed near the location, and was checked with radar indicating excessive speed.

Food Preservation Workshop May 13

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Offices of Austin and Fayette County will conduct a food preservation workshop on Saturday, May 13, at the Fayette County Ag Building, 255 Svoboda Lane, La Grange. An educational program on “Food Preservation in the 21st Century”, which includes up-to-date techniques for pressure canning and hot water bath canning will be presented.

Telecommunicators Week Proclaimed Here

Fayette County Commissioners signed a proclamation designating the week of April 9-15 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Fayette County. Several of Fayette County’s 911 dispatchers were on-hand for the signing, which took place at the Commissioners Court meeting on March 24.

Developers Must Maintain Roads for Three Years

Fayette County Commissioners approved a new rightof- way maintenance policy for subdivision developers who build new public roads in the unincorporated areas of Fayette County. Developers will now be required to maintain new roads they build for three years before the County takes over maintenance.

Habitat Completes Schulenburg Repair Project

Fayette County Habitat for Humanity completed its first home repair project in Schulenburg. Volunteers spent two months at the home working three days a week. During that time, they replaced all the siding on the house, several windows, and the water heater. They also replaced the insulation, exterior doors, and lights to ensure the home is safe and secure. This project marks the first of a new home repair program launched in late 2022. Habitat’s Home Repair Program looks to assist existing low to moderate-income homeowners perform critical repairs to their homes.
