OnAug. 28, the La Grange Leopards cross country program traveled to SE Metro Park in Del Valle for the Westlake Chaparral Invitational, with the girls varsity team stepping up to the 5K distance for the first time this season and both JV squads competing on a two-mile course.

The La Grange volleyball team rallied from behind to beat Brazos in five sets Tuesday 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 2725, 15-13. At times La Grange’s Brion Williams took over in the fourth set and Avery Griffin led the offensive charge for the Leps in the 5th set to fuel the comeback.

RTC The Round Top-Carmine volleyball team improved to 12-6 this season with a sweep of Louise Thursday 25-12, 2510, 25-14. TCU’s loss to UNC Saturday ensured nobody won last week’s football jackpot. All but one picker incorrectly predicted a Horned Frog victory (kudos to Jordy Zaruba for being the only one to get that college pick right, but he missed some high school picks). Mother Nature brought the thunder, but it was La Grange and Navasota that brought the lightning. In a season opener that was delayed an hour by bad weather Friday, La Grange and Navasota played a football game that moved at times at video game speed.

The Flatonia football team grabbed a 28-24 victory over Palacios in the season opener for both teams Friday in Flatonia. The Bulldogs ran for 230 yards as a team led by 119 yards from freshman quarterback Boston Targac and 100 from Adrian Anderson.

The Schulenburg football team lost its season opener 49-0 at Hallettsville Friday in a game that was delayed because of Friday’s storm. Among the bright spots for the Horns was the play of Caden Herzik, who caught a team-high five passes for 36 yards, and Tim Lara, who was the team’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 59 yards.

La Grange High School’s Mighty Leopard Band is jumping head-first back into practices for their upcoming season, rehearsing eight hours a week after school to prepare for their show called “Embracing Life.” “It follows the journey of a young woman battling depression as she searches for hope in overwhelming darkness,” said Head Band Director Chris Cooper. “Guided by friends who have overcome their own darkness, she learns that healing isn’t about escaping it, but about finding the strength to move through it and ultimately embrace life.”

The La Grange football team is going to score points. With nine returning offensive starters back from a team that averaged 31.5 points per game last year there was little doubt about the Leps’ offensive potential coming into this season.
