The La Grange Optimist Club Summer Track Team competed at the TAAF Region 3 Meet July 11 in Lago Vista. Some 65 athletes competed in 104 individual events. They also took eight relay teams. The top four in the region advance to State.

The LC Express youth track program has a number of local athletes that are advancing to the Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa Aug. 1-8.

The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps of San Antonio stopped in La Grange for a couple days last week. They’re currently on tour with Drum Corps International, which bills itself as the “Major League” of marching band competition.

Legendary Schulenburg head boys basketball coach Richard Hoogendoorn is resigning. Hoogendoorn told The Schulenburg Sticker last week he chose to resign rather than accept a role as the assistant coach for the team, but is considering other coaching opportunities elsewhere.

For just a few weekends a year, swimmers from the Fayette Area Swim Team (FAST) and Schulenburg Sharks traded in their familiar team colors to join forces with athletes from across the Small Aquatic League of Texas (SALT). Together, the combined team represented SALT at the TAAF Region 5 Swimming Championships, competing against larger programs from Bryan, College Station, Waco, Navasota, and Hamilton.

The Fayette Area Swim Team (FAST) traveled to El Campo on June 27 to compete in the SALT League Meet of Champs, the league’s championship meet that concludes the regular summer swim season. The event brought together the league’s top swimmers from the Fayette Area Swim Team, Columbus Catfish, Schulenburg Sharks, and WAKE Aquatics for a day of elite competition.

La Grange’s own Ashtyn Smith has been named an AAU All-American after an outstanding performance at the AAU National Volleyball Championships in Florida. Competing in the highly competitive 16U division against some of the nation’s top athletes, Ashtyn was selected as an All-American Athlete —an honor awarded to only a select group of players in her age division.

Bob McDowell of Oak Hill Ranch in Round Top and his sister, Mary Keadle, on their 6-day biking adventure through the Dolomites in Northern Italy. The Fayette County Record newspaper made the whole trip.

The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association has named three Fayette County players All-State – Fayetteville’s Jack Schley and Round Top-Carmine’s Will Neese in Class 1A and Schulenburg’s Jayse Janda in Class 2A.
