Nelius Helping Lead No. 4-Ranked RTC

Morgan Nelius is helping to uphold a lofty family tradition at Round Top-Carmine.

She has a pair of older sisters that have state volleyball medals (Taylor Nelius was on the state silver medalist team in 2019 and Avery Nelius was on the 2024 state bronze medalist team).

Morgan’s late grandmother was a former coach at RTC.

But now, just a sophomore, Morgan is carving her own path for the Cubettes team that has started the season 16-8 record and surged to a No. 4 ranking in state on Class 1A.

Morgan made the move to outside hitter this year and hasn’t looked back – consistently among the team leaders in kills and digs.

“She’s just so selfless,” said RTC head coach Caitie Weishuhn. “She’s playing loose. Coming in as a freshman, especially playing with an older sister on the team last year, I think she was playing a little tight. It’s been nice to see her play free ... Roots run deep quite often here. When you get to see an entire family come through it is quite rewarding and you feel like you had a hand in raising those kids ... just hearing Morgan talk about her sisters and wanting to do well for her grandmother, it’s super cool.”

We’re proud to honor Morgan Nelius as this week’s Fayette County Record Athlete of the Week.

We caught up with her for an interview Tuesday and started by asking her about the team success.

“We’re definitely still building, but we’ve done pretty well,” Morgan said. “We’ve combined all of our skills. We’re slowly putting it together and hopefully at the end of the season we’ll be pretty good.”

Morgan, like her coach, thinks she’s playing looser this season.

“Last year I was tight, but this year I feel more confident,” Morgan said.

She said playing alongside her twin sister helps keep things fun.

Morgan is involved in a lot more than just volleyball.

“I’m in FFA, FCCLA, BETA, band and a lot of other sports,” she said.

As far as team goals, Morgan said hard work will determine how far her team can go this season.

“I want us to keep growing together and every day at practice work harder and work together,” Morgan said.

RTC Alumni

Scrimmage Friday

Morgan will be on the court Friday as the Cubettes host the RTC alumni in their annual scrimmage.

“There’s a couple of things I hope come from the scrimmage,” Coach Weishuhn said. “I hope the alumni come back and say wow this team is really good and they are way better than we ever where – and also you have a stout group of women that still want to come out and compete, and I think that’s what Cubbette volleyball has done over the years. It teaches people how to compete and battle and always want to give it their all.”

After Friday’s scrimmage the Cubettes have about month in the regular season, before what Weishuhn hopes is a long playoff run.

“It could be an exciting year,” Weishuhn said. “There’s a lot of time between now and November, but if we keep everybody happy and healthy I think we have a good shot.”
