Harry Behal’s memories of his life-altering decision to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II A Occasional Feature by ELAINE THOMAS One day in 1941, Harry Behal got off work at his $18-a-week job at the Flatonia Motor Company in Flatonia, Texas, and stopped by the local cafe for a cold longneck beer. He idly picked up a Marine Corps recruiting brochure lying on a table and read it, even though the attitude of most Americans at the time was to let Europe fights its own wars.

John “Honza” Cernosek will step down from the La Grange City Council this month after more than 26 years in office. “For these last 26 years, I’ve had a good time,” Cernosek said.

On Tuesday, May 16, meetings of the La Grange Fayette Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5254 and Auxiliary will be held at the VFW Home in La Grange. Meeting time for the VFW Auxiliary is 5 p.m. A joint Loyalty Day program and light meal will be held at 6 p.m., followed by the VFW Post meeting. New potential members are invited to attend.

La Grange Ward 4 Councilman Quenten Gonzalez told the Record that he plans to resign from the Council at the May 22 meeting. Gonzalez said he and his family are moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

For the first time in its history, the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange will present four exhibits on display simultaneously featuring a wide array of “Extra Texas” subjects, collections, and artists. Running from May 11-August 26, 2023 will be ATribute to Mary Ann Vaca-Lambert, Western Quilts by Sarah Dryden, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Blue Ribbon Winners, and the doll exhibit What a Doll!

Landon Koehne, 16, of Schulenburg died in a onevehicle accident Friday on private land in Lavaca County after a one-vehicle roll-over. He was a junior at Hallettsville High School and the son of La Grange Police Officer Justin Koehne.

Schulenburg voters picked Connie Koopmann as mayor in the city election on Saturday, May 6. Koopmann previously served as an alderman and as Mayor of Schulenburg from 1997 to 2001.

Every vote counts, as two local elections proved on Saturday. According to the unofficial tally, Arthur Bosque defeated Chris Jernigan for a seat representing Ward 4 on the La Grange City Council by a vote of 28 to 27.

A pickup truck took a dip into Lake Fayette after sliding off a boat ramp Thursday afternoon, May 4. Chief Deputy Randy Noviskie of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said the driver was attempting to load a boat onto a trailer when the accident occurred.
