The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center had a very successful event on Jan. 26 with a total of 17 units of blood being donated. It was sponsored by Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Carmine and Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Round Top.

This is Part III of a series looking back into happenings a century ago in Fayette County and centered predominately on the severe drought that struck the state of Texas in 1925. Drought seems to be a subject that the citizens of our county know very well. Now, let us examine how our ancestors dealt with this situation.

The AMEN Food Pantry appreciates all in the community that provided food assistance for the month of January. This includes all who provided monetary donations, food drives and the AMEN Gardens.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Fayette Memorial VFW Post No. 5254 and Auxiliary of La Grange will meet in the VFW Post Home at the La Grange Fairgrounds. The Auxiliary meets at 5 p.m.; and at 6 p.m. the Post and Auxiliary will enjoy a meal after which the Post meets. Potential members are invited to attend.

When national and Texas bi-centennial certificates and the national bi-centennial flag were formally presented to the La Grange community, the keynote speaker primarily directed his remarks to junior and senior high school students at the event. U.S. Representative J.J. (Jake) Pickle told the crowd, “You will remember that you came from good stock and what you’ve inherited was made possible by those who came before you. You are being looked upon to be the leaders of tomorrow.” The patriotic program at the La Grange School Auditorium was planned by faculty member Mrs. Marjorie L. Williams.

The first Winchester Community Services Award for the Winchester Area Civic Association was awarded to Rhoda Gersch and Margaret Atkins. The team was nominated by the WACA members for their work on developing the Winchester Quilt Block Trail and working with the International Quilt Festival for recognition of the trail throughout the United States. Margaret and Rhoda have taught monthly classes for the last seven years on drawing and painting quilt blocks, with students from all over central Texas and other states participating.

La Grange Police David Gilbreath reports on the following incidents his department responded to during the week of Jan. 5-12.

The Fayette County Czech Heritage Society met on Sunday, Feb. 2, at TCHCC in La Grange for their annual Soup Social. Attendees enjoyed a variety of soups (polévka), including kulajda (Bohemian mushroom), broccoli cheese, and beef soups, which were served with sandwiches and desserts. A birthday cake was served in honor of Bob Heinsohn’s 80th birthday. Members with Jan and Feb birthdays include Cathleen Noska, Marilyn Cernoch, and Kathie Craft. The business meeting started with new officers elected for 2025 being installed by the reigning Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Madelyn Karstedt. Former Treasurer since 2018, Alfred Ermis, thanked the members for their support through the years. A Facebook page for the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society has been created with information about meetings and events. It is the time of year for high school graduating seniors to apply for scholarships. The Fayette County CHS has a $500 scholarship available for those who reside and attend school in Fayette County. A State CHS $500 Victor Petter and a $1000 Albert Blaha scholarship are available for first-year college students and high school seniors throughout Texas. The next CHS gathering will be the annual picnic with sausage wraps, bingo, and a silent auction on June 10.
