Schulenburg Deceased Veterans Honored

The Schulenburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 143 put the United States of America flags on all deceased veteran graves on Memorial Day. This program started a number of years ago. They were put out on the graves in the morning and taken down the same day. Years later we decided to leave them all week long. We then decided to honor them by leaving the flags on the graves the whole year. It was then decided to replace them every year on Memorial Day.

VFW, Auxiliary Meets May 19

Officers and members of the busy VFW Auxiliary of Post 5254 voted unanimously to hold their May 19 meeting by teleconferencing with President Vicki Latapie presiding.

Cynthia Kulak Celebrates Graduation

Cynthia Kulak celebrated her graduation from the University of Texas with a small family gathering at her parents, Darrell and Dana Kulak’s, home. Cynthia and her friends, Rob Gomulak and Hailey, came in from Austin and were joined by Cynthia’s brother, Elton Kulak, and his girlfriend, Miko Anderson, from Houston.

WACA Scholarship Deadline is June 30

The Winchester Area Civic Association will be offering a $1,000 scholarship to a Fayette County resident who is enrolled or will be enrolling in an institute of higher learning for careers in the professions of nursing, teaching, criminology/peace officer, fire sciences, dental, radiology imaging or EMT certification/paramedic. You must be enrolled in a college or approved program by the Fall of 2020 semester or have been enrolled in a college for at least one semester with a GPA of 2.5. The application is due by June 30. Ellinger Arrests, I-10 Drugs

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday June 1, the Fayette County Sheriffs Office was advised of an incident that occurred in Austin and that the suspected vehicle was possibly headed into Fayette County on Hwy 71. Deputies located the vehicle and engaged in a pursuit. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the Ellinger area where several subjects wearing all dark, long sleeve clothing fled from the vehicle. Two suspects had been apprehended at press time.

Navidad Valley CattleWomen to Host Annual 5K Ranch Run

Navidad Valley Cattle-Women will hold their 7th Annual 5K Ranch Run on August 1, 2020 in conjunction with the Schulenburg Festival. The Reunion Theme will continue this year as it has inspired family fun and teamwork. This means that along with the traditional age group prizes there will be additional runners recognized. The categories include: largest family group, youngest participant, most “seasoned” participant, and runner who traveled the furthest to participate. The funds raised will be awarded to graduating seniors from Fayette, Lavaca and Colorado counties with an interest in Agriculture. Navidad Valley CattleWomen have presented over $60,000 in scholarships since they first awarded scholarships in 2006.
