Peaceful Protest in Schulenburg
A group of people from Schulenburg, Weimar, Gonzales and the surrounding area held a Black Lives Matter demonstration on the steps of Schulenburg City Hall Wednesday evening, June 3. Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek called the event “entirely peaceful.” About 25 to 30 people chanted and held signs with messages such as “Racism is an illness” and “Being black is not a death sentence.” Look for a story about the protest in Tuesday’s issue. Fair Seeks Royalty Contestants
Attention young ladies residing in Fayette County entering grades 9-12 for the 2020-21 school year, the Fayette County Fair Association is seeking 10 ambitious, outgoing individuals who would like to vie for 2020 Fayette County Fair Queen and compete for academic scholarships, prizes and share memories of a lifetime.
La Grange Football Field Vandalized
Some of the turmoil facing the nation came to La Grange over the weekend. As reported in Tuesday’s paper, a group of teens attempted but failed to organize a riot Sunday night on the La Grange Square Sunday night. That morning, officials at La Grange High School discovered some vandalism that appears to be inspired by the more violent protest movement.
One-Vehicle Rollover South of LG
A man suffered serious injuries in a one-vehicle rollover Friday evening, May 29. The accident happened sometime before 7:50 p.m. near the intersection of US 77 and Petter-Rainosek Loop. The driver was transported by a PHI helicopter to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin. Additional details were not available in time for this publication. Trooper Josh Berger with the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the accident, but he had not yet filed the report. Many local DPS troopers, including Berger, have been temporarily reassigned to the protests in Houston and Austin.
CDA Court No. 1962 Has Texas State Court Memorial Scholarship Winners
In support of education, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), Texas State Court awarded their annual Memorial Scholarships on May 1, 2020. Forty-six Memorial Scholarships totaling $44,000.00 were given to qualifying high school seniors of 2020. Courts throughout Texas sponsoring winners were notified and asked to present the scholarships on behalf of the Texas State Court; and Court Annunciation #1962 La Grange had three winners.
