Mosquitos Becoming ‘Health & Safety Issue’

Standing water caused by heavy rainfall over the past few weeks caused the mosquito population to explode across Fayette County. Folks feeling the sting in some unincorporated areas are asking the County for some relief.

Mosquitos Becoming ‘Health & Safety Issue’

That familiar buzz and bite are signs that mosquito season in Texas is here, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife entomologist. Sonja Swiger, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service entomologist and associate professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Entomology, Stephenville, said biting mosquitoes are a seasons-long problem that often changes based on the environment.
Biting mosquitoes like this Aedes variety prefer different breeding sites and are active at different times throughout a day.

Swiss Alp Twister Rated EF-1

After experiencing active weather across Central Texas last week, the National Weather Service has confirmed details on the tornado in Fayette County from Tuesday, May 18. At 6:42 p.m., an EF-1 tornado occurred near Swiss Alp just west of Highway 77 and lasted for approximately 10 minutes.

County Passes Border Support Resolution

Fayette County Commissioners Court passed a resolution of support for counties in South Texas struggling with increased illegal immigration from the southern border. The resolution says that the State of Texas “has had no choice but to use and deploy Texas Department of Public Safety Officers, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas National Guard and others to protect and defend Texas’ sovereignty and the safety and property of Texas citizens.” The resolution goes on to say that the state’s actions at the southern border harms all citizens in Texas by taking resources away from other counties.

Schulenburg Man Injured Near Plum

A Schulenburg man suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 71 near Plum on May 12. According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened around 3:22 p.m. at the intersection of SH 71 and State Loop 220.
