Lori Berger, longtime area civic leader and business woman, has retired from the St. Mark’s Medical Center (SMMC) board after nine years of service. Ms. Berger’s first involvement with hospital leadership was as a member of the Fayette Memorial Hospital Foundation that raised money to help build a state of the art hospital St. Mark’s Medical Center.

Jan. 11-14, 1972 The operator of a small grocery and tavern between Muldoon and Flatonia was fatally burned in an accident near his place of business.

The Fayette County Spring Coyote Control Program began on Jan. 4 and ends April 29. The contest is being held to give landowners, producers, and sportsmen an opportunity to assist in the control of coyotes in Fayette County. Coyotes cause predation on livestock and result in economic losses to agricultural producers in the county.

Luckily a passerby saw the flames and let the dog out before it was injured. “We absolutely encourage everyone to be prepared and make sure their pets are warm and cared for during the cold temps. Please make sure heating lamps are tied and secured and free from touching any framework or bedding. A good deed to aid in the comfort of our animals can turn disastrous quickly if proper safety measures aren’t taken. We’re glad no pets were lost this evening, the material things can be replaced,” the department said in a statement.
