Skydiving Drama in Brenham; Caldwell Officers Attacked

• The Skydiving Freedom initiative has been shut down because the hangar owner who was going to lease to the company has backed out, telling sources that she “felt threatened” by comments made during the city council meeting. The initiative was approved by the Brenham City Council during their regular session on Dec. 2 and all things were in line to get started. Some time after the city council meeting, things changed, and as of now there are no plans to move forward with the project.
• David Zajicek has announced he will be stepping down as Burton’s mayor in March. The announcement came as Zajicek was sharing the mayor’s report during the city council meeting Tuesday. Zajicek told councilmembers he will be stepping down from office for “strictly personal” reasons effective March 8, 2022. Zajicek said he will submit a formal letter of resignation to the council at its meeting in January.

• Garwood resident Dante Larenz Stevens, 25, was arrested Dec. 3 and charged with the Sept. 10 murder of Eagle Lake resident Jonathan Cain Segura. Eagle Lake Police Department announced that the Texas Ranges arrested Stevens at approximately 10:30 a.m. Stevens was booked at the Fort Bend County Jail and later transferred to the Colorado County jail. Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Billy Hefner assessed a bond of $1,000,000. Segura was shot multiple times at his home in the 500 block of Stephens St. at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sept. 10, and later succumbed to his injuries.

• A Caldwell man about to be on trial in an assault case abruptly attacked four law officers Dec. 7, in district court, tried to take a gun from one of them and had to be restrained. It took seven officers about four minutes to restrain the defendant, and District Judge Reva Towslee Corbett declared the case a mistrial. The attack occurred in front of a jury panel during jury selection., and the prospective jurors were dismissed. All four of the officers attacked were injured, but no one in the jury panel or anyone else in the courtroom was injured. The defendant’s name is being temporarily withheld to avoid tainting a future jury panel that will consider any future cases involving him.
