The operator of a small grocery and tavern between Muldoon and Flatonia was fatally burned in an accident near his place of business. The victim of the mishap was 79-year-old Lyt Henson. According to Deputy Sheriff August Brunner of Flatonia, Henson was carrying a pot of hot water to his hogs when his clothes burst into flames, burning him to death. Deputy Brunner speculated that Henson’s heavy coat had brushed against his wood-burning stove as he was heating water. When he walked outside into the wind, the coat and the rest of his clothing burst into flames. He perished before help arrived.
Five young hippie-type males apprehended near Weimar late Saturday afternoon were brought to La Grange to answer charges of theft in connection with taking antique markers off the old bridge over Navidad Creek in the Dubina community. Sheriff T. J. Flournoy said a local resident reported that two van-type vehicles had driven onto the bridge and the occupants began to remove the cast iron markers on top of it. Weimar officers were alerted and made the arrest. The quintet, all of whom gave Houston addresses, pleaded guilty to theft charges in justice court and each was fined $25.70, a total of $137.50.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Millie Herzik, 74, of La Grange; Mrs. Agnes Niesner, 96, of La Grange; Mrs. Georgia Ann Poncik, 37, a Fayette County native; Mrs. Millie Herzik, 74, of La Grange; Dr. Roxie A. Weber, 77, a native of Ellinger; Leslie Hackemack, 65, of La Grange; Mrs. Eulah W. Hatfield, 83, a native of West Point; John L Wessels, 84, of West Point; Mrs. Clarence Staha, 85, of Schulenburg; Miss Alma Koehl, 71, of Ellinger; and Mrs. Frank Kret, 82, a native of Praha.
Five La Grange ladies were among the 225 March of Dimes volunteers from across Texas who were honored at a First Lady’s Tea given by Mrs. Preston Smith in the Texas Governor’s Mansion in Austin. They were: Mrs. William Koehl, Mrs. Frank Brauner and Mrs. Ralph Voss, co-chairs; and Miss Clara Roitsch, chair of the Fayette County chapter of the national foundation. Also invited but unable attend was Mrs. Betty Voss, local MOD teen chair. Mothers’ March chairman Paul Hoelscher also was at the event, which had become an annual occasion.
Mike Wallace, an announcer with KVLG Radio in La Grange, and Mrs. Wallace were leaving for McAllen, where he had accepted a job with KRIO Radio, a 5,000- watt Top 40 station.
The La Grange City Library announced the arrival of a 54-volume set of The Great Books of the Western World published by Encyclopedia Britannia. The purchase was made possible by memorial gift donations. The set included 443 ancient and modern classics by 74 of history’s greatest geniuses, including the writings of Plato, Homer, Cervantes, Tolstoy, Freud, Shakespeare and many others. Even though the library was closed for six weeks for remodeling during 1971, book circulation increased to 7,571. New titles on the shelves included: Life with its Sorrow, Life With Its Tear by Lester Atwell; The Shadow of the Lynx by Victoria Holt; The Complete Poems and Stories by Edgar Allen Poe; A Fine and Private Place by Ellery Queen; and A Covenant with Death by Stephen Becker.
The Citizens Band Radio Club was meeting at the Legion Hall in La Grange on Thurs., Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
George Bolfik was in Houston Monday and Tuesday attending a Briggs & Stratton field service school. The purpose of the two-day program was to acquaint dealers with the latest Briggs & Stratton innovations to better serve their customers.
Falstaff Feed Division on E. Colorado St. was selling Falstaff’s Sir John’s Choice Dog Food (25% protein) in 5, 25 and 50-pound bags. A 5-pound bag cost 50¢ and a 25-pound bag sold for $2.50.
The Ellinger Chamber of Commerce organized a disaster and distress benefit for the three places of business that had recently burned to the ground. It was set for 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the hall. Any size donations to help those affected would be greatly appreciated and could be left at the Shell, Humble or Texaco stations in Ellinger.
A turkey shoot was set for at 1 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 16 at the Live Oak Cafe in Warrenton No shot smaller than no. 8 was allowed.
South Central Savings Association in Brenham was offering savings certificate accounts paying 5¼% to 6 % and savings passbook accounts paying 5% to 5¼%.
Morgan Mercantile Co. in Plum advertised the following weekly specials: Gladiola Flour, 25 lbs. for $2.19 and 5 lbs. for 49¢; Rosedale Peaches 2½ size can, 29¢; Libby’s Golden Corn, 303 size can, 5 for $1; Libby’s Garden Sweet Peas, 303 size can, 4 for $1; Wolf Brand Chili, No. 2 can, 69¢; Robin Hood Cornbread or Biscuit Mix 6½ oz. pkg., 3 for 29¢; Nabisco Toastettes, 10 oz. carton, 2 for 79¢; and Blackburn Syrup, No. 5 jar, 59¢.
