Charlotte Crowley, 2nd-grader at La Grange Elementary School, earned first place recognition in the Republic of Texas Museum Art Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) at the Republic of Texas History Complex in Austin on June 3. Her submittal, entitled “Monument Hill,” depicted the monument on The Bluff that honors the 176 Texians captured from the 1842-43 Mier Expedition and its famed “Black Bean Incident,” as well as the Texians who fought as part of the 1842 Dawson Expedition. The remains of the Texians who lost their lives in these conflicts are interred at the monument site. Charlotte earned 1st place honors in District 8 of the DRT, and she was awarded a monetary stipend of $100 for her prize-winning art.

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath reports on the following incidents his departments responded to during the week of May 21-27. Accident On May 21, Officer John Wostarek was dispatched to the 1900 block of Hwy 159 for an accident.

Garden Pole production is way up. Come to the Senior Connections on Tuesday afternoons or on Friday mornings if you like to be helpful, if you like to be creative, and if you like being around others. There are two to three ladies right now that are really having fun being creative, but we need some help with prepping the poles, painting them with primer paint, and then a base color. Once this is done, then the next group will get them ready for sale.

The Ellinger Chamber of Commerce held the 86th Annual Ellinger Tomato Festival on Mary 26-18. Festivities included a barbecue cookoff, the Tomato Trot fun run, the “Chopped” cooking challenge, live auction, live music Friday and Saturday night by Western Bling and The Bandits, and a fried chicken and sausage dinner on Sunday. The Fayette County Country Music Club will host their monthly Opry on Monday, June 19 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Grange, Texas. The show starts at 7 p.m. and the doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $8.

La Grange I.S.D. held its end-of-year convocation for teachers and staff on Friday morning, May 26. Superintendent Andy McHazlett praised the staff for their work throughout the school year. He discussed the school’s vision and goals for the upcoming school year. In addition, the school recognized a number of employees who reached various milestones in their careers.
