Senior Connections Hear From Chief Brenek
Garden Pole production is way up. Come to the Senior Connections on Tuesday afternoons or on Friday mornings if you like to be helpful, if you like to be creative, and if you like being around others. There are two to three ladies right now that are really having fun being creative, but we need some help with prepping the poles, painting them with primer paint, and then a base color. Once this is done, then the next group will get them ready for sale.
We have orders in for some Schulenburg Shorthorn and Weimar Wildcat garden poles. The Houston Astros garden pole is very popular too, so the new style will keep us busy for a while. If you would like to help with this garden pole production or if you would like to order one, just give us a call at (979) 743-3227. We will also come out and pick up any 4x4 posts laying around your yard or shed. They sure will help to keep our project going and we would really appreciate your support.
Schulenburg Chief of Police Troy Brenek came to Senior Connections on Monday, June 5 to inform us about the Drug Take-Back Program that is housed at the Schulenburg Police Department. He wanted everyone to know that this is where you bring any old medications, meds left over after someone passes away, or any outdated medicines. We should never throw them in the trash or flush them down the toilet because that causes danger to others.
Chief Brenek was adamant about our members being aware of the phone and computer scams that target seniors, too. He remarked about how they get you mixed up, nervous, and confused. If you feel like that about any calls you may be getting, immediately notify someone in your family or speak to your banker.
Family talks are very important as our parents get older, he remarked. He shared stories of his experiences as a law enforcement officer. He asked everyone to agree to be realistic about their limitations, whether they be mobility issues, diminished vision and hearing, or reaction time issues. We all know about how the loss of independence is scary and that it is coming, so that’s why he said the word “realistic” is important. We all agreed. Chief Brenek said that no one’s life is worth losing, ever. He said, “you all are the backbone of our community and we need you.” Thanks, Chief, for all your heart-felt words.
Our daily attendance numbers are up, the meals are good, the staff keeps everyone engaged and we all have fun at Senior Connections. Last Wednesday, we had two tables of 42 and now we are approaching having two tables of Mexican Train Dominoes, too. We were looking for some extra chairs, we had a wipeout on lunch plates, and Mike Olle, from Fayette Savings Bank was calling Bingo, so you know we all had an awesome time.
