This concept, started back in 1987 by Mike Walker, was to get people to move off of the Interstates and take a journey onto the smaller, less traveled highways through the small towns.

County Fire Chiefs Gather for Meeting

The Fire Chiefs of the 10 different departments in Fayette County met in La Grange on Tuesday, May 16th. The meeting was organized by Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller, Precinct 4 Commissioner Drew Brossmann and Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Angela Hahn. Brossmann is also a member of the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Man Injured on One-Vehicle Accident

A man from Cedar Creek suffered injuries after a onevehicle crash on SH 71 on May 11. According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, 43-year-old Ricardo Guerrero of Cedar Creek was driving a white 2014 Jeep Cherokee west on SH 71 near West Point. The report said the Jeep veered toward the center median, and the driver made a faulty evasive action to the right. The Jeep went into the ditch on the north side of the road and went airborne. The Jeep struck a tree with its front center. The Jeep then rolled, damaging the right side and the top. It came to rest on its top in the north ditch.

Tomato Festival is This Weekend

Mark your calendar for the 86th Annual Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Tomato Festival planned for Friday, May 26 – Sunday, May 28. The festival kicks-off Friday night with Chef’s Choice Competitions. Categories include Entrée, Dessert, Chips and Salsa, and Margaritas. Enjoy live music from 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. by Western Bling. For early risers, the fun continues Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. with the 2nd Annual Tomato Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk. Cooking continues with Farmer’s Breakfast and Bloody Mary competitions.

Schulenburg Says Tiny Homes Are OK in Some Areas of Town

The City of Schulenburg amended its zoning ordinance to allow certain types of alternative housing known as “tiny homes” or “cottage homes.” These types of homes offer an affordable option at a time when local real estate prices are booming. The amendment renamed the previous R-5 Manufactured Home District to “Manufactured Home and Alternative Residential Housing.” “Tiny homes” will be limited to the R-5 district.
