A private applicators license is required by the state, in order to purchase restricted use pesticides. In order to obtain a license, it is mandatory to attend a pesticide applicator training and pass a 100-question test. This course will teach participants proper procedures for applying pesticides. This is the training only. Testing procedures will be explained during the training.

Mike and Sherry Dittrich of La Grange recently traveled to Petaluma, Calif., to visit their son Aaron, who is currently a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. Aaron was stationed at the US Coast Guard Training Center near Petaluma for four weeks. While they were there, they got to tour the Muir Woods, Redwood Forest, Alcatraz and Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. As of Sept. 9 total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 1207: 580 dogs and 627 cats in need. As of Aug. 26, the shelter has 127 animals in care: 70 dogs/57 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

Sept. 18-21,1973 A 31-year-old California man was sentenced to two years in the Texas Department of Corrections (state penitentiary) on a charge of burglary with intent to commit theft in the 155th District Court of Fayette County.

Fayette County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 last Thursday to approve the 2024 Fayette County Budget. County Judge Dan Mueller, Pct. 2 Commissioner Luke Sternadel and Pct. 4 Commissioner Drew Brossmann voted in favor of the budget. Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom and Pct. 3 Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff voted against.

Eddie Marburger of Round Top won the title of Schützenkönig at the 151st Annual Round Top Schützenfest on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Mike Steinhauser is an optimist. His law office in down-town Flatonia sustained lots of water damage Thursday after a powerful storm peeled off part of the roof above the historic 150-year-old building.

Monument Hill State Historic Site hosted the annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony as part of Texas Heroes Day on Saturday, Sept. 16. The ceremony honored the men buried in the vault at Monument Hill who were part of the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the illfated Mier expedition of November 1842, also known as the “black bean” incident. Texian Army reenactors fired three volleys from their muskets to salute the fallen heroes, and they laid wreaths on the tomb.
