Shelter Update

As of Sept. 27, the total intake for 2024 for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 1272: 564 dogs and 708 cats in need. As of Sept. 27, the shelter has 113 animals in care: 40 dogs and 73 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

Medicare Enrollment Programs Being Offered in La Grange & Schulenburg

Medicare Open Enrollment can be confusing. To answer questions on what to do whether you are signing up for the first time or re-signing up for the 2024 year attend one of the two “Medicare 1 on 1” workshops being offered by the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area and hosted by Fayette County Committee on Aging, Schulenburg Regency Retirement Villas, and the Fayette County AgriLife Extension office.

Bellville Little League Fundraising Vice President Indicted For Theft

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) reports that a Bellville woman was arrested for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 from the Bellville Little League. The report said allegations were first reported to the Bellville Police Department, but due to the facts surrounding this case, the ACSO Criminal Investigation Division, in coordination with the Austin County District Attorney, took over the investigation.

Lunch-N-Learn Series Preparing For A Freeze Scheduled Oct. 8

The Bluebonnet Master Gardener Lunch-N-Learn educational program is a series of 9 informational meetings designed to provide gardening or general landscaping information for homeowners. Fayette County Master Gardeners plan and present a variety of programs from experts in the area and across the state. This series is designed with the homeowner in mind; bring your lunch and learn about a variety of topics that help you have a more productive garden, prettier flower beds, or how to better understand your landscape ecosystems.

Flatonia Elementary Celebrates Award

Last week the U.S. Department of Education announced that Flatonia Elementary was one of only 31 schools in Texas to be named a National Blue Ribbon School, which highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups. Above, the entire campus gathered to celebrate the achievement.

Heather Dornak, right, Flatonia Elementary Counselor, and Winston the dog, are part of a certified therapy team at Flatonia Elementary. They are certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Winston goes to school with Ms. Dornak everyday.

Local Priest Appointed Vicar General

Bishop Brendan Cahill (left) appointed the Very Rev. Jasper Liggio (right) as Vicar General for the Diocese of Victoria. Father Jasper is the pastor at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. He succeeds Msgr. John Peters as the Diocesan Vicar General, who had held the post since 2012. Msgr. Peters was the pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville prior to his retirement this week. Father Jasper’s installation ceremony took place at the Diocesan Chancery in Victoria on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Vicar General serves as the Bishop’s principal deputy within the diocese.
