Local Man Dies in Propane Truck Accident

The driver of a Fayetteville Propane delivery truck died in a wreck near Cat Spring on Monday, Sept. 30.

The wreck happened about two miles southeast of Cat Spring on FM 2187. Austin County Judge Tim Lapham, who also serves as the Cat Spring Fire Chief, said the call came in around 1:10 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a bobtail propane truck laying on its passenger side. The chassis was on fire, Lapham said, causing pressure to build up in the propane tank. Lapham said the pressure relief valve was venting gas from the tank, which also caught fire.

“The tank held up and survived the wreck,” Lapham said. “The gas ventilated and burned off. There was no danger other than the immediate area.”

The driver died at the scene.

“The driver succumbed to injuries in the accident, not from the fire,” Lapham said. “A couple of Good Samaritans stopped and pulled him out of the truck.”

Lapham said they tried administering CPR to the driver next to the burning wreckage, but he was already deceased.

The Record has learned the truck driver was Bruce Kubena of Ellinger. He was 61 years old.
