Saint Cecilia’s Episcopal Church in Round Top, a creative community that celebrates the arts as pathways to the Divine, presents a special program of Music and Meditations on Ash Wednesday, March 5, at 5:45 p.m. in the historic Haw Creek Chapel in Henkel Square This special service features a performance by the critically- acclaimed Axiom String Quartet. The service includes Four Meditations on Philip Glass’ stunning String Quartet No. 3, “Mishima.” Between movements priest and author William “Father Bill” Miller will share four contemplative meditations in anticipation of the sacred season of Lent: Giving Up (Simplicity), Taking On (Practice), Looking In (Penitence), and Longing For (Desire).

Numerous Fayette County 4-H members competed in the San Antonio Livestock Show Commercial Steer Contest on Monday, Feb. 17 and Tuesday, Feb.

The Sacred Heart Altar Society members met on Monday, Feb. 3, in the Msgr. Harry Mazurkiewicz Parish Center. The meeting was opened with a prayer followed by the standard financial reports. Two thank you notes were read by Vice President Marian Tajchman. Seventeen ladies attended the meeting.

In a Knights of Columbus exemplification ceremony on Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station, along with 60 other Brother Knights, Mr. Richard Calloway and Mr. John Heimsath of the Fayetteville- Ellinger KC Council 3168 advanced to the K of C’s ultimate and most esteemed patriotic 4th degree. Sir Knight Richard and Sir Knight John are welcomed into the Bishop Odin K C 4th Degree Assembly 1095.

Legislation to revert back to the traditional date for honoring war veterans was given final clearance in the House of Representatives in Austin, 124 to 1. The Senate had already approved the change and Gov. Dolph Briscoe had supported lining up Texas with 47 other states in wiping out the fourth Monday as the legal holiday for observing Veterans Day. It was assured that Texas Governor Briscoe would sign the bill into law.

The Schulenburg Black History Month Parade in Schulenburg had to be canceled Saturday morning due to bad weather. But that didn’t stop folks from attending the Black History Month Program inside the Schulenburg KC Hall that morning. Pictured above, Mayor Connie Koopmann read a proclamation celebrating the generations of African-Americans who have contributed to the Schulenburg community.

The deadline for candidates to file for the May 3 school board elections was Friday, Feb. 14.

The La Grange school board talked about a lot more than just the four-day school week at their meeting last week. Here’s a roundup: Public Comment Becky Snyder addressed the board about her concerns on Texas Senate Bill 2 which is the bill that will use public funds for private.

Members of the La Grange Noon Lions Club, and their youth club affiliate, The Leo Club, gave out Valentines around La Grange on Friday Feb. 14.

On Friday, Feb. 21, Schulenburg Police Officers spoke with a subject, Amanda Campos, 42, of Schulenburg, wishing to report her wallet had been stolen. Once the matter was addressed, a check of Amanda’s ID showed her to have an active warrant for her arrest. Campos was arrested on a Motion to Revoke Probation warrant original charge, Theft by Mail. While being placed in handcuffs Amanda asked why her boyfriend who was also present wasn’t being arrested as he too had a warrant.
